BMW extended warranty

My AUC warranty expires in the next few days, been looking at options on the BMW site but not even sure I want to go for a warranty as my mileage is only about 4k per year.

Whats the crucial differences between the Comprehensive policy, the named component and the driveline policy. Don't think i will go for emergency cover as rarely too far from home.

Way i look at is that £30 a month is £360 a year, all depends of course on what goes wrong but nothing has except boost pipe in the last year and that was covered by a goodwill payment. Other guys talk about saving the amount you would pay for warranty and having it if anything goes wrong and if all is good then you still have the cash.

Anyone know for how old a car you can buy the extended warranty for? Guess must be at least 5 yrs old.

The information is all here:

http://www.bmw-warranty.co.uk/Pages/...Comparison.htm

I went for the comprehensive with brake down cover earlier this week. I think it works out cheap enough when you consider peace of mind.

To save £360.00 per year is all well and good whilst not paying for warranty but if the turbo goes or something else major most people will be looking for something more substantial than £360.00!

Yes agree with the above poster about saving £360 is minimal compared to the cost of a major repair but its the liklihood of needing a major repair with me doing so low a mileage that I am trying to reconcile in my mind.

Seems the Fully Comp is the only one worth considering in my brief reading, anything else leaves potential to be paying for a warranty that does not then cover the item that has failed.

My AUC warranty will come to an end pretty soon, but I will absolutely be renewing it.

I've had two fuel injectors, coils, plugs and an O2 sensor replaced in the last week - can't imagine how much that would have cost me.

Oh, and the car still isn't right - so it'll be going back into the dealer.

Personally, I'd pay the money just for the peace of mind, even if I wasn't sure if I'd need £360 of repairs.

Its the nice feeling of the peace of mind that any repair will only cost me an excess that would attract me versus the feeling that I spent almost £400 per year for nothing, but guess thats insurance.

Few questions ... must it be taken out the day my current warranty ends or can there be a break. The quotes I got state offer expires today which is my last day of AUC warranty.
If I pay monthly I assume this can be cancelled anytime. I reckon I prefer monthly as may not have the car for a full year, who knows.
Can the warranty be transferred to a new owner if say I sell the car privately and they want to continue paying the monthly fee.

It's the old story of paying out in the hope that you'll never need to use it.......bizarre concept, but as you say, that's insurance.

Personally, I'd want the extended warranty and the comprehensive one at that, I'm a bit conservative by my own admission but that piece of mind is worth every penny, despite your current mileage?

Have to say you have a car with a peach of an engine in it but it's all those bloody electronics (ECU's) and sensors etc. and the labour charges that make me sweat a bit.

I wouldn't leave a break tbh. As an example my Mum has done this with her Octavia and they wanted £58 to check the car over before agreeing to issue an extended warranty even though she's had the car from new and had it serviced at the main dealers.

I would assume if paying monthly, you can cancel at anytime.

Some extended warranties are transferable to the next owner but often only when the warranty has been taken out from when the car was new. You'd have to ring and ask BMW.

If it makes it any easier, an extended full Porsche warranty for say a 911 is around £1,250 p.a..............makes the BMW look ok?

Thanks beemerbird and yes its all those expensive electronics that do concern me along with the massive labour charges. also altho I know its very unlikely a turbo could go I do a lot of relatively short trips and these can't be doing it any good, if I knew any faults were covered it might mean I don't need to be as careful with not revving too much from cold etc.

The monthly fully comp option without emergency cover is £32 a month, thinking of going with that but need to buy tonight apparently. Guess i can pay a few months and if I sell the car or decide the payment isn't worth it then I can cancel. Don't you just know if I stop paying something major will break the next day but again thats the thought insurers want us to have so that fear keeps us paying.

For sure the 911 warranty is pricey but again the costs of repairs could be massive.

When would you normally get a letter about extending the warranty? My 3 years is up 1st November, so is it too soon?

my letter regarding extending the warranty came one month before the warranty expired. Im left wishing I had taken up the offer, 8 days after the warranty expired, the maf sensor has packed in. Allegedly.

Yes about a month or less before expiry of warranty you get the letter. They claim you CAN'T buy the warrnaty if you let the current one expire, seems quite bazaar that they wouldn't still want your business.

Does this process include peeps who have had the car since new or is it just for people who had AUC warranty?

I would think you get a letter whether it was an AUC or new car warranty, either way they want your cash.

Went for the monthly fully comp £100 excess for £32 per month. Will see how long i can justify the expenditure but letting it go past today seemed to close my options so purchased the first month just now.

Seems like a good plan. The fact that there is an excess implies it's more like insurance than a warranty.

I've been trying to remember how much Audi said an extended warranty was for the S5, mine was an AUC. I THINK it was around the £800 mark but was literally an extension of the original 3 year warranty.

Least you're sorted and have left yourself with options.

Yes it is really insurance I guess, you can have zero excess for another £10 per month, £100 excess as I did or £250 excess for £7 less than I paid. Reckoned the £100 excess was the best bet as going zero excess would cost me an extra £120 per year. Assuming no more than one claim in a year then I have made the right decision and even if I have a couple of claims its not the end of the world. £250 excess was a bit steep in my opinion and would become quite serious if i had a few claims in a year.

Not sure everyone realises but there is breakdown assistance included in the standard warranty so you don't have to tick the box for the extra cover unless you really want the option of them putting you up in a hotel and lending a car etc if you are far from home. The standard package includes recovery to the nearest BMW dealer which is fine for me and probably most people.

But isn't this insurance/warranty for when the standard warranty expires?

Yes this is the extended warranty which kicks in when either the initial 3 year warranty expires or the 12 month warranty you get when buying an AUC ends. Mine was the latter, bought the car exactly a year ago today !
