Toronto new bylaw
http://toronto.ctv.ca/servlet/an/loc...TorontoNewHome
Parking in Toronto just got a little more complicated thanks to a new bylaw that restricts how many vehicles homeowners can park on their driveways. City council quietly passed the regulation, part of the new harmonized zoning bylaw, at its last meeting of the summer, CTV has learned. The bylaw took effect Oct. 1. The law allows residents with a single-car garage to park one vehicle in the garage and one on the driveway. Those with double garages may park two vehicles in the garage and two on the driveway. Details can be found in the online version of the bylaws. The parking section (10.5.80) begins on page 29. The change has sparked some debate among Torontonians. "It's nonsense," Scarborough resident Sal Lamantia told CTV Toronto's Naomi Parness. "In terms of my own driveway, it should be my own decision." Others say the new rule keeps streets looking cleaner. The law was created after some residents complained others were turning their driveways into parking lots, city officials said. The city will rely on complaints in enforcing the restriction, officials said. Fines will be determined in court, and could reach up to $5,000. The regulation is being grandfathered in, meaning residents used to packing several cars on the driveway are still allowed to do so. They'll have to show they've been doing it for a while, which could prove difficult, said Lance Cumberbatch, director of the municipal standards and licensing division. Residents buying or building new homes will be most affected by the change. At least one resident has appealed the bylaw, sending the matter to the Ontario Municipal Board for review.

without going into details on my thoughts of the bylaw I will simply say I think it is ridiculous for you to be ticketed for parking in your driveway, I strongly believe that one should be able to do with their property as they please. If this is passed, whats next? Forcing people to landscape a certain way?
In my opinion this does not stand a chance!

That is just ridiculous - all the policies out there are anti-car.
Politicians seem to have forgotten that the auto industry is what keeps the Ontario economic engine going. Remember that thing called the recession that started 2 years ago and what economic impact it had when it appeared imminent that the Big 3 automakers were going bankrupt??!! |

yea i know its being 'grandfathered' but inevitably, in 2 to 5 yrs time, the bylaw will probably be in full effect. so it may be slow process but one day, toronto residents will be getting a knock on the door and given a ticket because they have 1 too many cars in their driveway.
it just bothers me because i am planning to move to toronto in the near future for work related purposes. i used to live in vancouver and my family had a 1 car garage and we'd always park 2 cars in the driveway because the garage was full of bicycles, bbq grill, gardening equipment, etc... cant believe i'd get a ticket for fitting two cars on the driveway.

oh and whats going to happen to those houses that have no closed garage and only a driveway for parking??
i dont know if this still exists in toronto but there are tons of houses in montreal that have no garages at all. they just have a paved driveway.

While the by-law is offensive, I'm pretty sure it's not going to be an issue, i.e. it will not be enforced. I spoke to a couple of municipal lawyers at my Firm and they said don't even worry about it. It will end up being one of those obscure by-laws that gets buried and forgotten about.

this happened to me 2 years ago when I use to live in Toronto.
Got a ticket for parking 2 cars on a driveway which I had extended over 10 years ago. Fought it in court and it was dismissed, but the time needed to go to court and all is retarded. It is literally a cash grab for the government...nothing else. Note: When the government is getting poor, they implement more laws to fuck the working class. My suggestion: Move out of the "Toronto" district, problem solved. I did. |

Wait, I don't get this.....Take for example that I have a one car garage and I have one car parked on the driveway. Let's say my friend comes over and parks the car on my driveway, would this be illegal?

Of course MOAB is right; odds are good this will be one of those by-laws that is only enforced when neighbors hate each other, a few tickets a year. Not that it makes it any more tolerable... |

i park three cars soon to be four cars on my driveway everyday...cant wait for them to attempt this one one me lol..canada's little stupid laws like this that come up all the time make our legal system seem like a sick joke..
i got a question tho..say my entire property was lined with punji-pits (you know those booby-trap holes filled with sharp sticks) and this stupid parking cop decides to (tresspass) on my property and come and place a ticket such as this one on one of my windshields and proceeds to die in a horrific punji-pit related accident but never had a warrant/permission to enter my property (i would have certainly warned anyone who had permission to enter about the trap)..would i be at fault for this? a more realistic example would be a guard dog attacking this parking officer or something like that..seems like a pretty legit way to get rid of some parking cops in the GTA

If your "ownership" has permit written on it for both plate and vehicle, then the Province owns the car and the plate and they are allowing you to use it as long as you pay the associated fees. They can also change the laws regarding how they want to govern the vehicles they own (probably yours).
The new by-law, if you read it, does not apply to non-state owned vehicles. If your ownership does not say permit, you need not worry |

and here I was thinking about getting a permit to have no front lawn... only a nice smooth pavement where multiple cars can easily park when I have visitors... lol....
