Nailed Runflat Tire
i got nailed on one of my runflat tires today and the nail is still in the tire. Thus, i bringing it to BMW of San Francisco tomorrow and have them fix it.
Does anyone have any idea what they are going to do with the tire? are they gonna patch it up or replace it? please advice so i know what to expect from them tomorrow. Thank you |

Most dealers (all dealers?) won't fix RFTs because of liability concerns.
A RFT can be patched if the nail is not near the sidewall and the tire hasn't been driven on with low air pressure. But the problem is that a shop can't tell by looking at the tire if it's been driven on with low pressure. To avoid possible liability issues, many shops and most (all?) dealers refuse to fix them. That's what my dealer did. But some independents will fix them if you assure them that the tire wasn't driven with low air pressure. If I were you, I'd keep the pressure above 30 psi and find a shop that will fix it. Doing so will save you $300-$400. |

I got 3 nails put into my rf and the dealer told me exactly what drivermans said that they won't repair it because it is too much of a liability to them. I took it to a tire shop that said they could patch it up but since my tread was getting low anyway, I just replaced it.

This is why I purchased the "wheel & Tire" insurance at my dealer... To be honest, I patched a RFT and went about 2K miles on it, but the tires were due to be replaced anyway. Most will tell you that any nail, even if it's not in the sidewall, can limit the integrity of the runflat system, and the tire should be replaced... RFT are so expensive so I now have the insurance on it just incase So if you go to BMW, they will likely tell you to replace it. Any tire place should patch it for <$20, but again, just beware as it may ruin its ability to be a runflat. |

America's Tire will patch it for free if it's not in the above mentioned locations.

That's exactly what the dealer told me so at 500 miles, I ended up buying a new tire. I swore that if I get another flat, I'm replacing all four tires with regular/non run flat tires. I have ugly 16" tires so they won't be that expensive to do all four.
That's amazing that America's Tire will patch it for free. Are you sure it's a patch and not a plug. Patching requires them to remove the tire, patch it from the inside, remount the tire and re-balance the whole thing. Usually about $25 at most gas stations and up to $50 at speciality shops. The other alternative I was thinking of buying a small 12 volt air compressor so if I do get a flat at least I won't have to run it on low pressure and then can get to my indy shop to get it patched. My two cents. |

THANK YOU ALL FOR SUCH A GREAT/HELPFUL RESPONSE. To answer all of you:
1.)No, i do not have a tire insurance, thus BMW won't cover that. I ended up not bring it to BMW. 2.)My two options are: get it patch (because tire is still DARN good) and get a replacement tire that is not a "runflat". with both of those options, i know the consequences --> if something happen i'm screwed bcoz i don not have spare. I have asked around BMW, mom n' pop tire shop, most of them will charge me $500 out the door for just ONE freakin' tire. Again, i appreciate all of your response. you guys are the best. any further comment/adivce would be appreciated. |

America's Tire simply does it for free. It is good Customer Service. You can get run-flats for around $200, America's Tire/Discount Tire sells it much cheaper than the Dealer.

The RFT's on BMW's are just "super duty" sidewall tires...so doing a proper patch in the tread area on a tire that has not been driven miles 'n miles without air...is no more dangerous than patchin a regular tubless tire....I got a nail in my RFT a couple of weekends ago..out in the middle of nowhere (as I had thought I might when I bought a spare kit!)...I slapped on the spare and took punctured tire to Sears Auto Center (only place open late Sunday afternoon...160 miles from home!)...RFT patched and rebalanced for $24 and on my way again! RFT's are (bad) joke! You can't run more than a short distance on em without air..and if you do go any serious distance..you ruin a $300+ tire...duh...Sure glad I went for spare..even if it means givin up trunk space on long trips..at least you don't have to spend a nite or two if it happens Sat...in a hotel waiting for BMW to open on Monday!....Dumbest thing BMW has ever done here..this isn't Europe where distances are small and you can limp 30 miles home from a weekend trip...If you travel upwards of 500-1000 miles on a long weekend getaway..gotta have a spare if you want to be back for work on Monday for sure!

My reply may not be timely enough for the OP, but this may be useful to someone...
I got a nail in a RFT over a year ago. I left the nail in, and squirted "fix a flat" stuff into the tire. The tire hasn't lost any air pressure outside the normal 1-4 psi over many months. The tire pressure indicator is on, but the tire is fine (I check them every month). If you can live with the indicator light, you can go a long time without needing to do anything. I did this because the BMW folks told me I needed to buy a new tire, but actually it would have been two tires for "balance" and consistency of wear...and frankly, I wasn't keen on spending $400/tire and trash tires that had half their life left in them.
