We had 6 inches of snow this morning, I could not believe it, my car stayed in the garage, as I have not put the snows on yet.

I'm on the North Shore of MA and I always put my winters on during the week of Thanksgiving. That's probably just a bit earlier than I need to but it keeps me safe just in case.

even with no snow on the ground, I believe that all seasons and summer tires lose traction as they get stiffer with colder temperatures. So putting winters in when the temp drops to around 1-2 C or under is a good idea.

Actually it's <7 degrees for summer tires. Below that and your summer tires turn stiff and become like plastic. Lately it's been dropping to as low as 1 degree in the mornings. Cars get their traction based on some "give" with the tires and the deformation to create the contact surface. That's why proper tires and the right tire pressure is important. Just did my tires this weekend. I know two others (one a former mechanic and another former car salesman) who have switched to their winter tires last week. Hey, I figure it's better creating more wear on a set of winter tires than not being able to stop and rear ending another car. ...that and I'll be taking taxi and TTC for the first week of snow. While I can stop, the guy behind me might be still running on summer tires. |
