New Owner of a 335i with Pictures
I made a somewhat impulse buy last weekend during my visit to the local BMW dealership and ended up driving away in a 2008 CPO E92 335i. The car is in immaculate shape and only has 23k miles on it and since it was the end of the month I was able to negotiate a decent deal. It is exactly what I had envisioned if I ever bought one: Montego Blue on Grey, Sport Package, Steptronic with shifters (Last 3 cars have been M6s and I'm tired of shifting in rush hour traffic=lazy).
The car is decently fast stock, and the paddle shifters are a lot of fun when you are diving into a corner and downshift 2-3 gears. I am coming from a STi and had a MKIV Single Turbo Supra before that, so high HP cars are not foreign to me, but the 335 definitely holds its own. I am very impressed with the car so far and I know it can be even quicker with some basic mods. One question I have is about the oil cooler. I think my car has one but not sure. I have what looks like an oil cooler in the passenger side front duct. It's the same color as the intercooler but I can't see the lines that run to it so I'm not positive. Can anyone tell me what the stock one looks like? Thanks Mike Last edited by MTR; 11-08-2010 at 09:01 PM.. |

Yup you have the oil cooler. Thats what you are looking at on the passenger side. I think all the 2008 came with them. But not 100% on that.

I'm up in Orlando. Do you know of any BMW meets or events coming up?
Thanks a lot for the pictures of the oil cooler, I will head out to the car to check. But yea this color is great, I have already had a lot of comments in person about it which is nice. |

Thanks for the warm welcome, this is definitely an active forum.
Yea I checked the wheel well and I do have an oil cooler. But about that, it seems like the oil temps take a long time to come up to temp and my drive to work is pretty much half way over before I can get into boost. Are you guys waiting until your oil hits at least 160 F before boosting? Also when I am in manual mode, is it ok to leave a stop from M2? Last question, when I am in manual mode and drop the RPMs fairly low in say 4th or 5th gear ~2-3k RPMS and roll onto the throttle to get a feel for the low end torque it always downshifts me into a lower gear. Is there any way to avoid this? Thanks for the help. |

Welcome - gorgeous car, congrats! I can answer the first 2 questions for you, but I don't know the answer to the 3rd, but I'll take a shot at it...
1. It probably doesn't take all that long for the oil temp to come up as you're probably just used to looking at a coolant temp gauge which starts to climb much faster because the coolant temp starts increasing much faster than the oil. That said, I would strongly recommend waiting until your oil temp at the very least starts showing a reading before getting into boost too much. I like to wait until 200 or so and even then I'm gentle with it until it's at full operating temp, i.e. around 240. I'm probably being a bit over-cautious but I plan on keeping my car for a while so I'm being as nice to it as I can be. 2. I don't think it's a problem at all to leave the car in 2nd for starting off in M mode. I believe BMW has it set up this way to save gas. In my personal view, I'd prefer driving off in 2nd with an automatic anyhow, especially in M or DS mode, as 1st is a real stump-puller and driving off in 2nd provides for a smoother take off. 3. I'm a bit surprised that your car is downshifting at these RPMs when in manual mode. Are you sure you don't mean sport mode, i.e. DS as opposed to M? Or, are you really leaning into the throttle at those RPMs? Here's a couple of points about the auto tranny that may help you to understand how it behaves a bit better... - If you put the go pedal all the way to the floor, it'll trigger a downshift switch and cause the tranny to downshift - you can actually feel it under your foot as it's a physical switch. Give it a try with the car off and you'll see what I mean. - If you "blip" the go pedal (a fairly strong blip, but you don't have to floor it) while in D or DS mode the tranny will downshift for you in this case as well. It's a really nice feature of the auto tranny that I believe all BMWs (at least the last decade) have. It's for those times you just want to quickly downshift a gear but don't necessarily want to floor the car and you can do it very smoothly with just your right foot. |
