Overheating Issues

I have an 06 325i with 200000km and had intermittent overheating today with the common red symbol shortly after no more heat from the vents and the vent cap leaking. I stopped the car, let it cool and it would be good again for the remainder of the trip with heat in the vents and no warning light. I did alot of searching and it seems to be related to the electric waterpump and thermostat or possibly a battery issue. I did the waterpump test with the key on/engine off with foot to the floor and could hear the waterpump turn on for a second and then stop and this would continually cycle until I shut off the car. I ran the car for a few minutes and the fan was running but would spool up fast and then go slow, then fast and slow continually in what seemed in tune with how i heard the waterpump earlier on. Sooo.......is the waterpump fried or might i luckily have an electrical issue or bad battery. The battery was weak when i bought the car 14 months ago was was recently unhooked a few weeks ago for exhaust work but the terminals seem fine. I appreciate the help since this is my only car and daily driver.

Sorry for you problem man, BTW, that's the wrong part. It's about $300.00 short of the real part. Here's the link.

Similar issues here

I have a 2006 325xi and had similar issues last week. Get this too, my car only has about 40k miles, which in my opinion is far too soon for the pump to fail. Anyhow, yesterday, I bought the water pump ($300), Thermostat ($70) and aluminum screws ($5.00); tax and all about $405 - ouch! This doesn't include labor yet!

Good luck dude!

The car has been bulletproof except for a valve cover gasket that the dealer replaced no charge. My only unknown is that it blows hot air for the first 10 minutes then starts blowing cold and then the temp gauge comes on. I pull over, turn off the car, wait one minute and then it blows hot air again for another 10 to 15 minutes and the cycle repeats......Is this normal?

Cheapest pump I have found in Canada is 450 so far. Bartmnan619 is right about Rockauto listing the wrong part....damn

Curious, did you ever change the coolant before you had the overheating problems?

If no codes are being thrown use Chevron Techron fuel injector cleaner (concentrate). It solves rpm fluctuating upon cold start-up. Also, for most BMW problems start off by scanning your car with the Peake Research Tool. It contains the actual BMW codes. If you want to register a newly installed battery for free (just buy a $10 cable) and google/download BMWLogger

Nope. I bought the car used so I am unsure when the last time the coolant was changed. I drove home tonight and within 5 minutes I lost heat but turned off the car when driving (unsafe I know) and turned it back on and regained heat. Lost heat 5 minutes later and repeated the same process then drove 20 minutes home with no issues?? I just want to make sure it is the pump since the dealer has the pump and thermostat in stock and I want to be sure this is the problem before blowing 7 bills tomorrow morning.
