Engine Shutting Off Post-Hoonery
The disclaimer:
Yes, I know what I did was illegal. Please don't lecture me on how it is unsafe or ask me if I'm 16. The parking lot was 100% empty and the only person at risk was myself and my friend watching. The story: 328i 6AT w/ PBX 10:45pm. Roads are wet from about an hour of misting. A friend and I go into a completely empty parking lot so I could play around with my car for about 30 seconds before going home. Full counter clockwise lock, DS mode, DTC/DSC off, step on the pedal, and the tail immediately whips around. I keep my foot on the throttle to hopefully continue the hoonery for a bit more, but the engine completely shuts off. I have to put it into park and press the ignition button again. As I leave the parking lot after a few seconds of disappointment, the wheel is horribly misaligned. I was holding the wheel at about a 45 degree angle counter clockwise, and the car was going 95% straight. A minute later as I hit the highway, the steering had fixed itself entirely and I cannot reproduce it. The concern: What the hell happened? Should I be concerned? Shutting off the engine seems unsafe (yes, I know, so is purposely spinning). Will I never be able to mess around with the 6AT assuming this is some kind of strange safety feature? |

that sounded like fun but o my! what happened later does not sound good. I hope nothing is loose. glad it corrected it self but park your car and check the steering (by rapidly turning both ways several times) and see if there is any more mis-alignments there... you should be alright but just in case for your safety.

Do you have active steering?

I had a loaner car where the wheel wasn't right, went back, and they said the control arm was bent. But it wasn't off and suddenly correct itself, it was off.

If the parking lot was on private land, this was likely not illegal.

Hey I do that shit, and I'm in my late 40's! Sounds like you have active steering and you got it all out of whack. Have fun. |

As we say in the software business - not a bug its a feature... sounds like something that the lawyers put in at page 890 of the disclaimer "in the event of spirited driving on damp parking lots if you apply acceleration while the steering wheel is close to or at lock the engine will shut down temporarily and the steering wheel will embarrass you until your next start."

There has to be a reason it's doing this, and a way to get around it!

I'm going to assume it is the active steering, but what about the engine stall?

It's kind of ridiculous that a $40,000 car with RWD cannot spin its tires for more than 4 seconds without completely shitting itself and coming out a peg legged hobo.
I wasn't even flooring it after it started to slide =/ I'm just trying to find out why it's doing what it's doing so I can avoid doing it again. A little hoonage should be allowed in these cars |

No, the Pbx has nothing to do with it. And OP you defiantly need to check it out to make sure nothing is bent.
