people really believe whats on wikipedia? i thought anyone can edit and change whats on there? no?

They can, but overall it's a result of positive network effects. The greater the readership, the more accurate it has gotten. Greatly aided by people citing their sources, in school it was a very efficient way of gleaning a rudimentary understanding of a concept and/or method for finding sources for other projects
