BMW Canada 3er lineup changes
I was fiddling around with the build your won tool, and found something:
Odd. What do you guys think? |

Definitely seems odd considering I see far more xDrive 328i sedans than I do RWD ones out on the road (at least in terms of the most recent 2009+ models).

dumb imo! the one thing that brought me to BMW over Audi (originally was shopping for a new TT) was that BMW let you pick pretty much anything you wanted while Audi had set options with different things (example, s-line you had to have black leather. v6 was only offered with quattro etc).
If BMW is limiting options i worry for their future customers... haha

Yeah, odd considering I thought BMW Canada was trying to push us away from RWD. Perhaps the configurator is still being updated.

The BMW.ca configurator is possibly the most inept bit of website coding I've seen on any major site. Brutally slow, and who uses Java for this kind of stuff any more? All of that aside, I would put money on BMW selling perhaps twice as many xdrive vs. rwd sedans these days. You have to give Audi credit for driving that trend and convincing North American consumers that something largely unnecessary is essential to their safety.

When I bought my 328 in 2008, the dealer here (in Ottawa) told me that most of the 3s they sold were AWDs. Though, I generally don't see that many 328s in either case: it's all 335s and 323s. I think I actually see more 325 e90s than 328s, and I think the 325 was only offered in the e90 platform for one year.

they are SKU'ing down.
this way, they have less models to produce while this lifecycle sells down. basically, it means the new model is likely a year away! |

Just checked with the US site...
No, the 328i is still cheaper than the 328i xdrive when you keep all options the same. 328i: Base MSRP$33,650.Montego Blue Metallic$550.Black Dakota Leather$0.Dark Burl Walnut wood trim$0.Convenience Package$2,350.Premium Package$2,650.Sport Package$2,050.Value Package$0.Heated front seats$500.Heated Steering Wheel$190.Smartphone Integration$150.Destination & Handling:$875.BMW Ultimate Service™ A suite of premium benefits that are included at no cost with all new BMW Vehicles.4 Years/50,000 Miles WarrantyIncluded4 Years/50,000 Miles Maintenance ProgramIncluded4 Years/Unlimited Mileage Roadside AssistanceIncluded.Total MSRP as Built $42,965 328i xdrive: Base MSRP$35,650.Montego Blue Metallic$550.Black Dakota Leather$0.Dark Burl Walnut wood trim$0.Convenience Package$2,350.Premium Package$2,650.Sport Package$1,650.• 17" Light alloy Star-spoke wheels style 286-with performance run-flat tires$300.Value Package$0.Heated Steering Wheel$190.Smartphone Integration$150.Increased top speed limiter$0.Destination & Handling:$875.BMW Ultimate Service™ A suite of premium benefits that are included at no cost with all new BMW Vehicles.4 Years/50,000 Miles WarrantyIncluded4 Years/50,000 Miles Maintenance ProgramIncluded4 Years/Unlimited Mileage Roadside AssistanceIncluded.Total MSRP as Built $44,365 (sorry about the formatting) I did notice the sports package on the 328i xdrive is cheaper than on the 328xi though. Even with the exact same wheels, the 328i xdrive sports package is slightly cheaper. I did notice this when I bought my 335 LCI. Originally I had planned a 335 using pre-LCI pricing and when the new pricing came out, the MSRP stayed the same but the packages were cheaper (to account for the Canadian dollar parity at the time). But even with the slightly lower price for Sports Package, the total price for the x-drive version was still higher than the non-x-drive version. So I think my conclusion is the Canadian site is just messed up...again. |

The xdrive sports package is cheaper because it is just the seats and trim -- no changes to the suspension.

As for sport package pricing - indeed the 3-series AWD sport package has the same wheels, tires, seats and steering wheel, but no upgrades to the suspension. As a result, the 328xi and 335xi with sport package ride almost a full inch higher than the RWD cars. That is the trade-off for AWD. (I bought RWD despite living in Calgary and skiing in the Rockies every weekend form Dec - Apr). |

Those discussions whether you need AWD or not is actually making sense now that I see what Torontonians deal with. And the majority of the demand is from Ontario. (hint: it might have to do with the fact that Toronto uses a ton of salt so the roads are mostly bare pavement in the winter...in Calgary and Edmonton, we just pile the snow on the side or pack it down) |

Yes, I had RWD BMWs in Calgary from about 2004 through 2007 with no problems at all. My E46 wagon with Michelin Pilot Alpins was much better than my E90 with run-flat Blizzaks though.

RWD in Calgary as well. No issues, only time I skid is where everyone else will skid too (say in a snowy parking lot that has never been paved)...
