AR Design DP Question...***HELP***
Ok, I looked and looked and cant get a definite answer on this for some reason.
Will catted AR downpipes give a check engine light on the 335i Sedan production year after 11/2007 with an upgraded BMW software release? ( I also have a Dinan flash if that matters). I really want that 20 extra WHP without doing a cel fix mod or running catless downpipes so that is not an option for me. Thanks in advance . |

The chances increase with the newer BMW software so it's a toss up. I personally would assume you will get a CEL immediately or at some point after install. May take a few months.

So if catted DP's still give a CEL, what's the point of even shelling out the extra dough for them? From what I've been reading on numerous threads, you may as well just get cattless DPs?

Interesting.... So are there any downsides to going with cattless DP's other than having to swap back to stock pipes for OBD-II Emissions Testing once every 2 years? I've got a PROcede, so I assume the CANclear or O2 sim will take care of the CEL.

I think It would be great if an aftermarket downpipe manufacturer created a good downpipe without a cel that was catted I would then buy it. IMO if you have a good R&D facility you can do some emission logs and see what causes the cel to pop and just alter the downpipe to the specs where it doesnt. |

AR's downpipes also place the secondary O2 sensors in almost the exact same location as found in the stock catalytic downpipes. I've talked with Andrew about this briefly and we believe a new set shouldn't trip any catalyst efficiency codes, but I don't know of anyone who's using these on a tune for a significant number of miles. There are two guys who post here occasionally using AR HFC DPs on the GIAC S2 tune-- you might want to wait for them to chime in. I'd feel more confident about running catless downpipes if I knew of some super-secret-stealth method of installing the BMS "DP fix" (I hate that term, they're O2 simulators) so that nobody would notice your modification at the dealership. |

Why buy downpipes with cats? I feel like the gain can't be much, the power gains come from getting those kitties out of the way.

I went for Dinan flash because of trouble free and reliability, so taking kitties out and plug some simulators into my car will be a total opposite. I dont mind spending extra and getting something that works just like the factory intended just with extra gain in flow.

Fking LOL @ domesticated feline as slang for a catalytic converter. The HPFP might as well become a puppy. I think I'm going to name the injectors after the Seven Dwarfs. One of them won't like being left out.

I beta tested three different sets of cats for CPE and theyball threw cels. The last set, the ones they're selling now I believe, only threw a cel once in a long while and only after seriously beating on the car. Normal spirited driving had no cel.
The problem is the space requirements not allowing a big enough cat. You need a bigger length or cross sectional area to maintain flow and still clean the exhaust. |
