Smile Procede v5 7DCT shift/safety logic

Hi guys
We've been working on this for a while. One of the problems we noticed when adding more torque to a 7DCT equipped car (either n54 or n55) is that the extra midrange torque can result in clutch slipping during full-throttle automatic downshifts. Depending on clutch/trans oil temp, this slippage can last a second or two where you notice the revs just float high without any vehicle acceleration. If it gets bad enough, an overtemp warning will appear on the dash sending the transmission in to a temporary safety mode were it wont even down/upshift for a few seconds.

So we added some logic that detects automatic downshifts and triggers a low boost mode until the clutch is fully engaged. Once engaged firmly, the Procede quickly transitions to full boost. Works like a charm. Downshifts are quick, slip-free and car takes off like a rocket.

(Similarly, the Procede will trigger a low power/boost mode if it detects transmission slippage in the middle of a pull.)

Below is demo video demo on our n55 DCT. Boost (0-20psi) is represented in the gas level gauge. Car is in regular D mode. For the first two pulls, all I did was stop on the gas and let the Procede+transmission control unit do the rest. On the third run, I tried to confuse the two by going 1/2 throttle to trigger a primary downshift and then quickly full throttle to trigger a secondary downshift before the primary downsnift was complete. Didn't miss a beat.

This feature has just been ported over to the n54 firmware but we still need to do some final testing. Anyone in the SF bay area have a n54 DCT car?

So when will the new v5 N55 DCT maps be available?

EDIT: I see they are posted on the Procede website. Updating today!

The DCT transmission in the n54/n55 has a lower power rating than the transmission in the m3. On top of that, both the n54/n55 make considerably more torque. So without changing clutch packs, we are limited in torque holding capacity. This does not mean that it wont hold the torque these engines make as power ratings are usually very conservative. But making life easier on them will make them hold it for longer. And perform better.

I assume we use the same update procedure recommended for N54 users when updating from v4 to v5?

(This)
Download v5 User Software:
Turn on your engine. Idle on Map1 for at least 5 seconds. Turn off engine.

Turn ignition power ON. You will now this by looking at your fuel level gauge (it should show a reading).

With your laptop plugged into an AC socket, update to the new n54 firmware (pro5v101.bin). Make sure the Procede resets itself after the update process is complete.

Turn ignition full OFF and remove key (no dash lights)

Insert key and turn ignition fully ON. Upload new map (11-25).

Clear DME codes (you may see several codes that were triggered during the firmware update process.) And they cannot be cleared until you cycle off/on your ignition power as described in the previous step.

I'm already running this correct? Or is with the new tweaks you were going to make?

The final changes to the DCT map was made last night. The AT/MT maps haven't changed in a week. So if you are running the DCT map, go ahead and update both map and firmware

Yes, same guidelines are recommended. Although truthfully with the n55, they aren't really necessary. You can simply update firmware and maps, start the car and start driving.

No problem. But the boost drop at downshifts isn't necessary with the 6AT. But if you like the way it feels/drives, no harm in running the DCT map.

Gotcha, on a side note, where can I find the 6AT maps? I've looked but I can't seem to find them TIA

Hopefully the track dries up so we can run tonight.

I actually talked to them a few months ago after my clutch started to slip (it stopped slipping after a few days of casual driving). They already have an upgrade. Definitely considering it.

I don't there there is any known weakness in the 6AT transmission itself. If it aint broke, don't fix it!

Here's a funny/sad out-take from two nights ago when i was doing another demo video of this DCT feature. I just happened to run over a grotesque pothole and slice a 2 inch long hole in my front passenger side tire. All captured on video :/

I've had that happen to me before and had the same reaction. I hope you charge the tire to the city. Potholes drive me crazy.
