Chance of new engine under warranty?
I have a 2007 335 with 60k miles under CPO warranty.
It was consuming oil @ a rate of 1qt/400-500 miles. Took it to dealer and was told it was due to leaking oil pan gasket and was replaced under warranty. They had mentioned to me that they used engine oil dye to determine where the leak was. 1 week later, same story; consuming oil at same or faster rate. Took it back to dealer. They told me they were doing some 'tests' and also put more engine oil dye in the system to determine where the leak was. SA admitted that he has no idea where the leak is coming from and it seems to be coming from deep inside the engine and MAYBE from where the engine meets the transmission. He said he cannot dismantle the engine to see where it's leaking until BMW approves of this. Question for those with experience: 1) How long does it take BMW to approve of this? 2) What are the chances of a new motor? 3) Will they rebuilt the motor in lieu of replacing? Thanks! Warren |

It shouldn't take long for BMW to approve the repair, especially if there are no other insinuating circumstances (such as highly modded car, etc). New motors are obviously very expensive, so it's not out of the question but most likely a last resort.

It can happen either way at BMWNA's discretion. If the Techs at the dealer can describe the problem, steps they have taken so far, and planned future steps toward a resolution then a visit from NA may not be necessary (at least initially). You should be able to talk to your SA and find out how they're handling it, if you're curious.

A lot of the time they have a traveling master tech who goes to the dealers to see big PUMA cases and he becomes the golden decision maker.

I would say it will get approved, they'll find the leak and fix it. I doubt they will do an entire new engine but it would be sweet. keep you fingers crossed.

I spoke with the SA and asked if they knew what was going on and his response after a slight pause was; "uh.. I'm not really sure but once we get in touch with BMW, we can let you know" |

I don't smell anything burning off but my friend swears he smells it.
When I did have downpipes, it would spew thick blue smoke(oil burning). I changed it back to stock because I was worried about the smoke. When I went back to stock, no smoke. |

Since your still under warranty you have a good chance of getting it repaired or very commonly getting at least 50% covered. just depends on who you talk to and what they are whiling to do about it.

OP are you the original owner? My buddy had an X5 motor replaced, and my aunt had her E46 M3 motor replaced. The X5 never ran that well ever since, but my aunt's M3/SMG was fine. Either way, I wouldn't want a new motor, or wouldn't want to be in a situation where it were needed. Good luck...

There is no way an engine can leak 1 quart of oil every 500 miles and it not be visible. So you had blue smoke coming from the exhaust when you removed the exhaust manifolds and had (cat-less) down pipes installed, then you put the cats back on and no blue smoke. See any cause and effect relationship here?

When I had my 07 335 e92. I had the same thing happen. It was using a quart every 500 miles. The car was perfectly fine for 0-24k never even knew the oil light was there. From 24-27k I stopped the dealer every 500 miles. Dealer kept stating we need to track it more. So they would drain it and measure it and what not thinking it was the sensor. Nope it was going somewhere. His next step was to contact BMW so he did. BMW came back and said track the oil / miles usage 3 more times. I was in a tough situation this was in October and my warranty was up Dec 12. I decided at that time I don't want to risk BMW coming back and saying well just went out of warranty if a costly repair (new engine) was the fix to the problem and not covering it. So I traded it off. What year is yours? I should note that when I was going through same situation I talked to a guy on here who had the same problem and his car was in the shop for a month BMW sent a specific N54 tech out and eventually resulted in a new motor.

I was disappointed to see my yellow battery icon turn on 2 wks out of warranty. But I felt better to know that BMW would have refused to replace it anyway under warranty (knowing that makes a person feel better, good job BMW!). The SA told me so. She said BMW would make them test it (c'mon now they wont really test it), and recharge it, and say it's ok and send you on your merry way. She said from her experience battery claims are almost always denied. Look at the brake squeal issue, there's even a SIB stating to replace the pads, unless of course the customer doesn't know about the SIB, in which case, tell him can not duplicate. What's a better clear-cut example of the BMW way, than the N54 problem-tree visio diagram? Many branches lead to the car performing as designed, get the customer out of there and deny claim. I downloaded it, I wouldn't think BMW would be so stupid as to have that visio readily available for download today. Why I think it's funny is that we accept that they won't do this and that under warranty, and yet we willingly do business with this co. because we love their cars. |

John you a right on. I was extremely frustrated with the way BMW handled my situation. But you are right "we love their cars". Can't stand what i'm in now and miss my BMW everyday. New M-Spot should be here in March!
