Cheap Ammo
Hey guys i live in Houston, TX and i own handguns and rifles. I was wondering if any fellow gun owners know where to get cheap ammo from. Just for target practice and plinking, etc. Of course for EDC i dont use cheap ammo but no one likes to see $$$ signs comin out the barrel when theyre shooting targets. Im specifically looking for cheap .223 ammo for my AR-15 and cheap .40 cal ammo for my glock. Local and online is fine. I dont even mind shooting reloaded ammo through either of these guns because i know that glocks and Bushmasters can handle anything. Thanks in advance.

Well if cheap is your objective try the wolf or near brand. And they are steel cored as well. Lakecity somtimes is offered on cheaperthandirt.com. a lot of choices there.
Wolf burns a little dirty but it runs pretty well. do a web search and you will find many options. Also, attend the next gun show in Houston. |

They sometimes have some pretty good deals. My first suggestion: Walmart. For the .40, go for Federal or Winchester White Box 180gr.

Don't use Wolf unless you are meticulous with cleaning your guns. The coating on those rounds gunks up guns bad and it will literally "varnish" the insides. A guy I know had to have his gun sonic cleaned three times on account of that crap.

They've got some pretty good deals on there. Good deals on guns, too. You can shoot pretty much anything except lead bullets in the Glock. They'll eat anything and keep on going. |

i've only ran wolf ammo a couple times during when i first owned guns...i saw, time after time, crazy spark flashes fly out the barrel, constant jamming soon after, followed by thorough cleaning later. never again. btw, if you ever need someone to test any of that free ammo, i'm your guy!

Here is what I am told, the only way to get the best deals is online, you have to buy a case not just a box. No local store can beat the online deals especially when you buy a case of 9mm rounds. Also, the cheapest is the russian stuff but as someone pointed out it will gunk up your gun, not sure what they are doing but I have seen what it has done to an AR-15 after putting a number of round through the gun. My son is shooting .22s target rifles at a local club, and they use cheap russian stuff since they let the kids shoot free. However the guns are a mess and rounds get stuck all the time.
I use to shoot .22 targets all the time and put thousands of round through my gun and never seen them as bad as what the russian stuff does. As it was said if you invest in reloading that is the cheapest, but not much cheaper then buy whole cases on a sale from an online website. Last edited by Maestro; 01-21-2011 at 04:41 PM.. |

I've used the Magtech before with good results. Wanna send some extra my way?

I never seem to run out of people that want to TEST out my ammo! Seriously though, I run an average of 10K rounds a year through my .45s so there's not much left at the end for sharing |

Walmart sells ammo for pretty cheap. If you are just going to use them for target shooting.

All of my target ammo are from Walmart. They price are very decent. I think a box of 9mm is under $10 and 45 is less than $20. The shooting range price is $30 for a box of 50 9mm and $50 for a box of 50 .45. If you but online, you would still have to pay for shipping so I don't see that much difference. I brought a 1000 rounds of 9mm last year and it's all gone now.

Wolf JHPs run flawlessly in my WASR-10 AK47 clone... But, what doesn't run in that action... I abuse my XD40, but truly do avoid any steel cased ammo for it. I'd just get WWB (Winchester White Box) for target shooting. If it's real practice/training course - I truly believe in spending the loot$ to practice with premium JHPs that you intend to carry. Yeah, 500 Hydra-Shoks or Gold Dots ain't cheap, but I think it's critical to practice with carry ammo. Same for competitions - to a lesser degree of importance.... I always have luck with CheaperThanDirt.com... |
