Tried using a monopod for panning shots today, not sure if I liked it. Sometimes it seemed to help, other times it got in the way...

I'm assuming you're using mode 2 stabelization? or just shooting really high shutter speeds to keep steady?

Straight on = mode 1 (or off) and relatively high shutter speeds

Panning = mode 2 and shutter speeds typically between 1/60 and 1/320. 1/60 is tough to keep stable in such close quarters.

i don't doubt it.


I forget the rule, for every focal length you're supposed to match the number for shutter speed to minimize shake. something like 1/100 for a 100mm, 1/200 for 200mm and so on...

anyone know this rule for certail? I'd love to experiment with it ( though results won't really show much on image stabelized lenses.

Mulholland and the other canyon roads near Malibu have been a playground for cars and bikes for something like 40 years. There are cops there every weekend, but they mostly leave people alone as long as they're not blatantly speeding or driving recklessly. The EMTs and fire department are also fairly busy up there as there is usually one or more wrecks per weekend. In fact, yesterday there was a guy on a bike who low sided and slid into the guardrail in the same spot where I shoot. I wasn't there at the time, but there's video of it. Thankfully the rider's injuries were fairly minor.

I do plan on selling images eventually, but when that happens I'm going to move to a different location. There is another photographer who has been working that spot for years, and I wouldn't encroach on his territory out of courtesy. He's a very nice guy and all the locals know him. Stepping on his toes would be a bad idea, plus it's just not my style. But if I set up at another location in the canyons then I'd definitely sell pics.

beautifull scenery behind the guardrail. Also, amaizing how fast the cop was there, they must just drive up and down it all day.

Yeah, jeans don't cut it when you crash. A lesson I learned the hard way. Took the nurse a while to pick all the gravel out of my thigh and butt cheek. The only parts of my body not scraped and bruised where the parts covered by leather or my helmet. Looks like he'll be limping for a while, but should be ok. The bike didn't suffer too badly either.

lol, he definitely wasn't a thinker.... deciding to tackle that road in jeans....

at least he chose to wear a helmet....

I don't think i'd ever go near that road in jeans, unless i was just doing a casual ride, but even then, i bet enough people go off of it to cover the corners in gravel. So may as well just wear the leathers and be safe.

that would not be pretty, that's why i stopped wearing my open face and decided to start going full face. Fortunatly the reasons were because wind made my eyes water, and bugs hurt :P rather then taking a spill.

Cool.. pics..one time i was "driving" though the Malibu canyons and some photograph was taking pics and spotted me through a turn; i gave him the peace sign and he snapped a photo..lol

I sort of plan at some point to stick a printer in the back of my jeep as i usually carry a laptop with me that has photoshop, so i figure something like that would be good in your situation. just sit at the side of the road, put a sign up with a price point of like 10-15$ for an 8x10 and just print it straight out the back of the car while they are waiting.

I will be trying this during the summer this year at my girlfriends riding events and see what kind of money i can make.
