Should I trade my 335I for a M Roadster? Read on...
First off, let me say I love my car. I have absolutely no complaints with it what so ever. This post may get people to do one of these , but before you do please listen to the reasoning for my thoughts. First off let me add, I am 20 years old and have been selling cars now for a year. Money and great and I just got the news that I am going to be moving to a finance director in may/june. I sell Nissan.. not the best or most expensive product in the world and def no BMW, but its the right kind of product to be selling when you a young salesperson.
Anyhow the other day I had to go on a dealer swap, and the car I had to drive to the dealer was an 07 red 350Z roadster. I was so envious of that car after 20 minutes of driving with the top down. If my 335I got the amount of attention and head turns that Z got in 30 minutes of driving over the span of 1 month, I would be surprised. One of my sales managers said to me the other day, "you should be driving a Z" I said.. hell no my car is lightyears ahead of that car. One thing he did say after that was true, yet erked me was "yea but the difference between a Z roadster and your car is yours was 12k more money and maybe 1 out of every 200 people who see if know the difference between it and a base 3 series you see on the road all the time." His comment goes along with the reality that the car really isn’t a head turner. Now I don't crave for attention, but when your spending 50k on a car that feels as if its invisible, and then get into a 36k car and feel like your a celebrity.. it gets to me. Now I know I dont want a Z, but however I have been considering swapping my lease and leasing a M roadster. I have been looking at a few loaded ones on swapalease ranging in the mid 5's for payments.. my 335 is $688. So I could be saving $100+ a month and be getting into a vert M. Now back to the fact Im only 20 and have no use for a back seat. To date no one has sat in the back of my coupe and I only used the rear of my 330XI 2 times and we could of easily used someone else’s car. I also mentioned earlier that I will be promoted to a finance director as well and that job also comes with a demo vehicle which will prob be in the form of an altima/maxima/murano. So with all these factors I am really debating if I should make the switch. Just to clarify on the age factor so this doesn’t get into one of those teenage war things, save your breathe, I live on my own and pay for everything myself. So what should I do? Inputs would be greatly appreciated! Matt

Since you loved the E92 so much you might as well wait for the new E93 which comes on on March 07.

Well, convertibles are for people who want to be seen. That's for sure.
I guess it depends on how much of an "attention" person you are. I'm not big on drawing attention to myself, but being a car guy and driving things that are flashy are part of the deal. Go drive one and see how you like it. If you like to be seen, pick out a bright color as well. And to quote Jeremy Clarkson, "make sure you have a mug that we want to look at...." |

Test drive the M Roadster....chew on it a few days...then make a decision. I love that car but not being able to recline, transport additional folks, trunk space, etc makes me stick with my 335i coupe.
Get what you feel is right for you. Sounds like you're going to do it anyways so get it...and then post the pics!

keep your car. Even though money may be good, save up for a house. If you keep pouring money into a car, you wont have much at the end of the day.
Save up and enjoy the amazing car you have... |

Matt, I noticed you're in MA; I grew up in MA, and I've lived in S. FL for 20 years now; you know just as much as I do that the amount of time you'd actually be able to enjoy a vert. in MA is very, very limited...maybe 60 days out of the entire 365 days/year! Why bother? I'm in S. FL, and we don't even see that many vert's down here (I mean many more than in the NE, but still not everyone has one) b/c too much sun is so bad for you; we're not even supposed to leave our houses here w/o sunblock, let alone drive around with the top down! Keep what you've got, add the PROcede (if you don't already have the XEDE or have the PROcede on order) and enjoy it! Then, when you're done, reevaluate your position, your wants, and needs at that time. Just my $0.02.

I traded my Porsche 987S 05MY for my current 07MW 335 coupe. It is true that the attention I got when I was driving my Boxster S was way more than the attention I am getting now. If you want to hook a lot of attention (I hope from the opposite sex) then get the convertable but if you want versatility then the 335. IMHO.

M Roadster would be a nice exchange for the 335i. In your case, if you are leasing both, you probably aren't planning on keeping the car afterwards... so swap to an M roadster if you can find a nice lease to assume. If you save 100 bucks a month, then thats even better. Then you'll have a nice roadster and be able to drive whatever demo they give you also. There is really no wrong answer here. |

It's too bad attention is your priority, because you're driving a great car. If I were in your position, I'd keep the 335i and get procede, some nice forged 19s, h&r sport drop, and an eisenmann. You'll get all the attention you want, and you'll keep the e92, which imo, is the the most well-rounded, elegant, and best performing car in that price point. You'll walk all over M Coupes, e46 m3s, cayman s', 350zs, s4s, whatever.

i was thinking of doing the same thing. Not for attention, but because i want a more impractical car! I am 23 and if i am going to have a car with no back seat and little trunk space, now is the time. Especially while i dont have kids, dog, or any other shit to lugg around.
My reason for doing so is that although the 325i is nice, its not quite as quick as id like. Ive been considering a cayman s, the m roadster, the m coupe, and if i save my pennies, mayby i could wait a little while longer and get a clk550. But, i would want to finance not lease. Because, since im young and all, i would want to own assets and not just be throwing my money away. Just as somone else was talking about saving up for a house. The house part is my main deterent from pulling the trigger. Because although i just got a great job/ promotion, im still living at home! ahh, decisions decisions! oh and my vote is to just do it!

I own a vert and ended up putting a hardtop on it. They are overrated, and anyone who says that you should drive a convertable Z doesn't know wth he or she is talking about because that car just looks like a pig that had its roof cut off. : People are probably looking at it only because they are wondering how nissan could make such an ugly ass product. With the questionable styling of the vert Z aside, I don't think that you should sell your car to get a vert just for some attention, but if that is what you like then go for it. Personally, I never liked all the attention that driving with the top down brought to my car. After I added the hardtop I ended up getting a ton more compliments anyway, go figure.

test drive the z4m and the boxster s and see how you like it.. honestly, you can be driving a 335 when your 30 but not many old people can pull off driving a sexy roadster..unless its a SL. i say, dont hold yourself back if you find you love the convertable feeling and i must say, its a very nice feeling (brother used to have a black boxster). if you like it, get it. like everyone says, you only live once!
