Gearbox AT broken?

Hi Guys,

I was wondering if anyone else is experiencing the same as me...

My 335 has been tuned since 5000Km. Currently it has 129000km on the clock.
Maintenance has been performed above BMW intervals, also the car get's never pushed before 80 degrees celcius. And with no push I mean no hard launches or RPM's above 2000-2500.

The issue is that the gearbox is making a squeezing sound when it's building up it's pressure. Mostly going from lower to higher RPM's especially upon sudden acceleration.
My dealer fixed it temporarly when I needed new oil, the oil level was slightly below normal. Dealer replaced everything that should be replaced when replacing gearbox oil.

This was 3 months ago. Now the sound has returned again. Dealer stated that they cannot do anything about it. They experienced this also with older BMW 5 series diesel gearboxes. It seems to be oil level related (Gearbox get's to dry under pressure resulting in the sqeeuzing sound...

Wondering what the community opinion is about this and if other members experience the same with higher mileage on the clock...

Thanks,

René

Dealer said they cant do anything about it?

They did the "fix" and the problem is back, so have them fix it? They are supposed to warranty their work for XX Miles XX months/years.

If you have a problem with an automatic transmission, the first start is fluids and gasket replacements.

After that.... IDK

Hi JP,

Thanks for the reply, the dealer fixed it "temporarily" by filling up the gearbox and replacing the oil filters and gaskets followed by the statement, that if the problems returns they do not have options to solve it, other then validating the amount of fluid and refill it afterwards.

The car is out of warranty. :-(

What did you mean with IDK? My poor English knowledge does not cover that one.... :-)

René,

There must be some independant shop that is qualified in overhauling ZF transmissions . I think the dealer will just suggest you to put a new trans in your car.
Over here in Belgium there are a few shops that are specialised in auto transmissions , just not sure if they are capable of working on these newer transmissions , but the principle should be the same. That at least if its a mechanical issue and not trans software related.

Yep, altough my dealer is really relaxed about my mods, they indeed adviced me to get a new gearbox if the problem would return.
BMW dealers do not overhaul gearboxes of diffs these days. All return to factory if there are problems with them.

I'm in the Netherlands, if you have names in Belgium of good ZF specialist, i'm more then interested. I believe a gearbox would be around 4500,- euros, overhauling one will not be really cheap neither i'm afraid of...

On the other hand, maybe a DCT would be a option (But I believe they can handle less torque then the AT) or hardening the AT if it needs to be overhauled...

Altough I'm still interested in figuring out what could be brong with the gearbox, giving this sqeeuz sound upon pressure build up within the gearbox.
