one would have to be a pathological liar

to sell a car?

i have 2011 z4 in order and i'm still fuming about my experience at the dealerships. (I ended up ordering in another dealership in the neighboring city)

it was especially surprising since i've had a good experience with their service department but this person and his boss, well, i guess, the whole sales department, seem to spit out lies as if there's no tomorrow.

initially confused, i even called BMWUSA to clarify some of things and I had them agree with me but they would keep coming up with new lies.

it was extremely frustrating experience cuz I was never told that many lies in such a short period of time, it was almost surreal.

i guess my question is to those who ever worked at a sales department in a car dealership. is my assessment more or less accurate? do they hire people by their ability to lie?

i didn't feel like whining to the whole board but here's just ONE lie I was told.

*****
got a good story to tell you - let it be a lesson that the dealers are, well, at least the ones i talked to today, trying the hardest to screw you.

i'm trying to return my car - call it OLD LEASE. it had a security deposit of $750, which I like to get it back or use it toward the NEW LEASE.

the NEW LEASE - as stipulated in the lease disclosure on BMWUSA website, requires 0 security deposit.

the dealer is trying their hardest not to return me $750 security deposit from the OLD LEASE and gave me the following story.

"BMWUSA needs to hold that $750 deposit as an escrow. the OLD LEASE is not completely closed. It is true that the NEW LEASE requires $0 security deposit BECAUSE you have an escrow with BMWUSA from the OLD LEASE. If you sign the NEW LEASE and at the end of NEW LEASE, if you decide to return the car, you will get your security deposit back from the OLD LEASE. In that sense, the OLD LEASE is not completely closed."

So they are trying to sell me the story that I will have $750 as an escrow with BMWUSA from the OLD LEASE. I asked them why they cannot simply transfer that $750 as a security deposit toward the NEW LEASE, he started to babble and became incoherent.

I am totally sick of the games the dealers play. Is it really too much to expect them to follow or honor what's stipulated in the terms of the lease in the BMWUSA website?

Why didn't you just walk out if you felt you were being lied to. They were not holding you hostage. Were they?

To me the key words here are :

"BMWUSA needs to hold that $750 deposit as an (do you mean in?) escrow."

"the OLD LEASE is not completely closed."

That makes sense. If the lease is not closed then the monies can not be released from escrow. Once the lease is closed (car returned, inspected and paperwork signed) then the money should be released.

I think the issue is with the salesperson not knowing how escrow works and in turn babbles a load of crap to you which pisses you off.

nope, that's not exactly what he was trying to say. He was trying to say that I'd sign the NEW LEASE which carries NO Security Deposit, but at the same time, I'd still have OLD LEASE open, which will be closed at the same time the NEW LEASE closes in 3 years. What he was really trying to do was to make me sign the NEW LEASE which carries No Security Deposit, and not having to return the Security Deposit to me from the OLD LEASE. This was just one of the lies they were trying to sell... (sigh...)

So did the other dealership give you your $750 back?

yes, the other dealer didn't give me any trouble about returning me the deposit from the OLD LEASE. it should not have been really that hard cuz i had with me the printout of the BMW March lease offer, which has all the details of the lease. so there wasn't much to negotiate to begin with. but this dealer tried to get more money and in the process told me some of the strangest stories I heard, including the one I just told you about.

i ended up saving about $2.5k by going to the other dealership. but it wasn't really money that pissed me off. i just couldn't stand all the lies from them with straight face.
