that was close!

Hi guys,

I've had a very unfortunate mishap today. We left London very early today and headed to Wales. The plan wac to do a couple of scenic drives and to start around sunrise before any traffic. Among them was the Black Mountain Pass between Brynamman and Llangadog. Needles to say both the road and the views were absolutely flawless. Unfortunately on one of the turns I failed to notice a nasty malicious stone sticking out of the grass just on the edge with tarmac. As a result I severely damaged two of the weels and tires on one side of the car. Thankfully the suspension seams to be in tact as the impact was not directly from below but rather on the edge of the wheel which can be seen on the tire - a piece of both the front and rear tire is literaly ripped out. Both rims are quite badly damaged but the rear one developed a small crack as can be seen in the closeup.

In my life I've seen much worse cases of damaged rims on rally cars that have later been refurbished to a nearly 'like new' condition. So Im assuming replacing them shouldnt be the case here (please correct me if Im wrong).

I would greatly appreciate any info on a shop in London (or close by) that would be competent to do it.

When it comes to tires its a completely different story. Can these 'cavities' be repaired and the tires used o a daily basis - just to be precise, Im not looking to use this particular set on track.

Any information and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Michal

Two new tyres minimum there, and if it was me it would be two new wheels as they can't be remotely straight anymore, not to mention the stress that's be placed into them.

Bad luck fella, pesky rocks!

From here it looks like on the front tyre just the rim protector has got it? Same fro the rear but, hmm, even if it was I'd change that cos it looks awful

Gutted for you.

there is a slight problem with replacing those tires as the rear ones have a couple of thousand kilometers on them and the front ones are nearly brand new - which would mean I need to replace all four. not keen on doing that at the moment :/

When it comes to repairing wheels - ofcourse I have found some shops online that do that sort of thing but if anyone could recommend a particular one I'd be very grateful - Id like to seek professional advice before buying new ones.

Apart from the obvious (look) the wheels dont show any signs of beeing hit. i drove 400km back from wales today. the alignment seams to be in tact and when I tried going above 160km/h on the motorway the ride was still fine.

The only thing that was noticeable was a pretty quiet sound an left turns when more pressure was put on the right (damaged) side of the car. IMO this could be the uneven contact with tarmac due to the rim cavities or in worst case the bearing damaged by the impact.

from what I understand, if the affected wheels werent round I could feel noticeable vibration when driving as fast as 160km/h as this has happened to me before. In this case the ride was completely smooth

Wheels and tyres are so so important items on your car.....do not take any chances with them.

Yes, the tyres appear to have rim protector damage only but I wouldn't use them on the road......track maybe......

Something to check for is carcase damage. It is possible for tyres to buckle.

I experienced this on new tyres after having hit the mother of all potholes. It manifested itself by introducing a slow side to side wobble which was only noticeable when driving at very low speed, I assume the greater forward momentum of higher speeds defeated the side to side action.

If it were me and I wanted to keep the tyres I'd take it to a specialist or failing that an MOT station and have it checked, as for the wheels I'd rather buy 2no MV3s and have them painted than repair those, sorry.

Mate.

Tyres need replacing without question. Cuts in the side-wall cannot be repaired and yo would be taking your life in your hands driving on them, particularly at speed/motorway.

I'd also be looking for two new wheels. They've clearly taken a serious impact and I would be concerned about how the stress of that has affected the integrity of the wheel as a whole.

Out of interest, how fast were you going when that happened and how did the car respond to the impact?

Thanks for the input guys.

I fully agee on the tires. It would really be pushing it if I stayed on those ones with the cavities being so substantial. when it comes to rims I remember seeing much worse cases. Just to let you konw I saw a specialist who refurbishes and, if necesary, rebuilds rims. We had a good look at it and we are positive it is only the side edge thats damaged. As there is just a tiny crack on the edge of the rear rim and a much smaller damage on the front one we will have it welded/rebuilt with aluminium composite. Also both wheels will be thorougly checked and calibrated if necesarry. Will let you how it goes.

Just to be clear, it should be a temporary solution. This is only untill I get a new set of wheels as I was thinking about replacing the rims this summer anyways.

I should have the wheels back at the end of the week. lets see what the result will be - Ill keep you posted. Ill ask him to take pictures along the way.

BTW, anyone selling a set of conti sport contact 5Ps ?

picture thread from the trip comming this evening

Ouch! I bet that was a loud bang. I was cursing minor lumps and bumps around Cheshire today but that must be in a different league.

I think it would be risking it with the alloys. It is defiantly weakened which is not good for a quick car. Are there any cracks on the inside shoulder?

nope, just the edge of the alloy is damaged. the impact wasnt directly from below -the stone kinda 'shaved off' the edge of the wheel and tyre

Completely agreed - there's 'getting home' and there's 'pushing your luck', not to mention the safety of other road users.
