Backdraft Cobra??
Any opinions on backdrafts cobra replicas? Pics below.
Always wanted an AC Cobra, but dont plan to shell out 250k + for the real deal. Not to mention you couldnt really drive and enjoy a "real' one. Looks like this would be a nice alternative and alot of fun. They come built from the factory (not a "kit") Still seems to have the stigma of a kit car though... Any experience or opinions on these? |

If it's your dream car, do it. Get as close to the real thing as you can (safely) afford. If it's just something that you admire as a car (work with me here), i.e. for the body shape and noise it makes, I don't see a problem with a 5.0 fox body conversion kit, which I think is ~$45-55k if properly built on a clean donor car.
What you posted looks more expensive and authentic (though I have no idea about the company), if that's what you're after, do it. I'd personally spend the money on a caterham/exige, but that's because I don't really appreciate the AC like some people I know... |

I used to think a 'tribute' cobra would be fun, but for the money I would rather have an authentic Sunbeam Tiger, I'd go for a 289, or find one that was tastefully modified that someone else dumped a pile of money into.

I don't know if they have changed the design, but their kit used to run BMW E36 suspension. It makes for a very fun, and capable car (independent rear)... think of an old M-roadster on a serious steroid injection with the ability to fit 305-width tires.
Body design is actually pleasing, and a very good reproduction to the proportions of the original. You still have the same old-style Cobra problems... leg searing exhaust (snakebite), unfathomable seating position, no radio, no a/c constant heat, leg cramps. Worst of all, your face gets stuck in this stupid grinning/smiling expression for a couple of hours after driving. |

I went to drive one with a roush 427 before I pulled the trigger. I pushed it, but I didnt lay into- Definitely a car to respect and I've seen lots of videos of guys turning them sideways and losing control. Lots of power and a modern drivetrain, but its still a design from 1965.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I'm really thinking about pulling the trigger on a BDR Cobra in the next few months. I love yours! What are your thoughts after a few years of ownership? Are there any options you didn't get that you wish you would have (or vice versa)?

They are the best!!! I sold my BDR in 2016 and replaced it with a 1951 chevy 3100 hot rod. I'll never sell the truck - its a keeper. The BDR held its value - sold to a buyer in japan. For me the BDR was amazing, but I was wanting something more authentic, period correct, and the pick up is that for me. |
