so BMW GERMANY just called me!

A guy with a German accent asked me whether or not I'd be interested in participating in a survey/interview, which would be held in 2 weeks and take 20 minutes.

I said sure.

He started verifying all the information about my identity and the car I have.

He gets to the "manual or automatic" question, to which I answer "manual" and he says:

"Oh, BMW is only interested in interviewing people with automatics"

Do they consider the steptronic an automatic or a manumatic?

Sounds like this may have something to do with the over heating issues.

If he was from BMW AG he would have known the exact specs of your car from your contact details

Sounds like a scam

not likely... if it were he would have asked, do you have a 2007 335i (sedan or coupe) with an auto transmission?

Are transmission overheating now? I think it's probably nothing to do with the alleged temp problems related to engine oil.

It doesn't amaze me that it takes a South African to point out the possibility of a scam....

Are we over cautious, or are we conditioned to be more careful than the average?

I'd go with scam theory also -

You all know not to give out any info over the phone. Just reverse the cycle...and turn them off by asking 100 questions on who they are, where they're calling from, ask for their phone number, correct spelling of their name to include their supervisor and phone number, etc. They'll quit after a while. Works for me.

...besides, it's fun and wastes their money -- the more telemarketing costs, the less companies will use it.

I'm on the Do-Not-Call registry, so if it isn't a charity or I do business with them it's illegal for them to call me. I have fun when someone breaks that rule -- I ask the 100 questions, then tell them they are violating the law and I'm reporting them. They usually hang up very quickly...

BMW Nigeria just emailed me

REQUEST FOR URGENT BUSINESS RELATIONSHIP

Dear Sir, my name is Denison Ezra Esq. I am the financial controller of Nigerian BMW, fine manufacturer of motor vehicles here in Lagos. I got your Contact address from an associate working with the Nigerian Export Promotion Council. I and my colleagues are officials in charge of offshore remittance in this Corporation (NNPC).

We are seeking your assistance to transfer of Forty Two Million (US$42,000,000.00) to your account for further private investment.

This amount accrued from an over-invoiced contract amount for the construction of an Oil Refinery Sub- Stations in Nigeria in 1999. The contract was valued for one Hundred and Twenty Seven Million United States Dollar (US$127,000,000.00), but we manipulated the figure to read one Hundred and Sixty Nine Million United States Dollars($169,000,000.00) The extra $42,000,000.00 is what we want to transfer now.

Etc...

You should have told him hold on, you'll go out to your car and double-check, and say your bad, it is a steptronic. That happened to me once, a co. was paying $500 for a 1 to 1 1/2 hr. focus group, so I was willing to do it as it was only 5 mi. from my house. They almost cut me because of one of my responses....an interviewer said she'd check and get back to me. I actually did the above, before she could check I changed my answer and was good to go. And they paid on the spot which was sweet.....

I was invited to a 2-day focus group in Germany after a few e-mails with questions from a research company BMW hired in Germany.

They promised to cover transporation costs to a resort in the alps... THEN they found out I was in the U.S. and didn't have budget for airfare.
