question for Steptronic owners
I know that newer models of step. (auto) 3 series will sometimes shift gears automatically in manual mode (even when not close to the redline or too low RPMs). My 330 is 2006, it never shifted (unless close to redline -upshift or coming to a stop -downshift). I took it in for service (oil change) a few months back and now when i'm in manual mode it will upshift (even if i'm not close to redline like 4500rpms), but only once I'm in 4th gear or above? Could this be due to a software update or do i have tranny/steptronic issues? Any thoughts/suggestions would be much obliged.....Oh yeah, before you start flaming about auto vs manual, i wanted to try steptronic, i've been a manual owner all my life, wanted to try something different....

It is very possible that it is due to the upgrade.
Mine did the same thing.

However, you can reconfigure the way your car shifts by resetting all the parameters. I think, and dont quote me on this, but I think all you have to do is disconnect battery terminal and re-connect it a few minutes later. The car will then recalibrate itself to your new driving habits. The harder you drive it, the more aggressive it will shift for you on a daily basis.

I am sure it is a software issue. BMW may have done an update to protect the transmission so I don't know if I would be in too much of a hurry to change it back. I have the same car. I don't use the manual mode very much but I don't think my car shifts out unless I am at redline. The only exception is when I put it in the performance mode and let it shift automatically. My guess is a quick call the the dealer will tell you if they did a software update when you last had your car in.

Hmmm. I don't like the sound of this. Gonna have to check mine out this week and see if it does this. Just went to the dealer a month ago.
