Why are our turbos so quiet?
I've heard some cars with twin turbos that have a deafening "PSSSSSHHHHHH" sound...
TT Cobra (57s @ 15psi): Of course there's the ridiculous supra turbo "surge" between shifts. So, is it a matter of our turbos being buried underneath the engine? Size? Design / manufacturer? Boost level? I'm sure with different tunes and intakes you can hear ours differently. Just curious... thanks. |

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that sound is from the BOV. Our cars have a quiet BOV, but you can get a louder aftermarket one.

Correct, you are hearing the pressure release (Blow Off) more than you are hearing the spooling of the turbos...

Aftermarket BOVs are not expensive for the N54 ... JBSPEED sells one. Then it will be very audible.

the cats on the DPs and the intake box muffle most the sound of the turbos. Put in DCIs and catless DPs and you will hear them spooling all the time.

Sometimes, I'm surprised by the complete lack of understanding of some of our basic turbo engine components.
Our turbo's are not quiet.. at all. They have very pronounced spool when you run DCI's. In stock form you can't hear it quite as much because they are muffled in the stock airbox. In cars that have DCI's and catless DP's you can very clearly hear the turbo's spooling... obviously, its that vacuum sounding "whoosh". As far as BOV's go, you do not hear them until you shift, or release the throttle. At which point they vent excess pressure in the line to prevent compressor surge. Our stock DV's essentially perform the same task but they redirect air back into the stock box so do not you hear the vent as clearly. Turn up the boost with some software though and IMO the stock DV's are fairly noisy themselves. Anyway.. OP That mustang TT is loud because it has an open atmosphere wastegate dump instead of a recirculated wastegate. That means when the car hits target boost, the wastegate opens to prevent overboosting and your basically listening to the raw engine note straight out of the exhaust manifold into the atmosphere. The open dump is different that in our cars because in a circ'd system the excess exhaust flow remains in the exhaust line and exits through the rear muffler. Pretty much only aftermarket setups, or high HP setups run open dumps. They are illegal for road cars because you dumping unscrubbed pollutants into the atmosphere. I can't hear anything besides crap music on the Supra vid, but what your probably describing is the BOV venting air.

That is because those cars are using blow off valves. Our cars come with diverter valves. One releases pressure (BOV) and one recirculates (DV).

i know there are more knowledgeble people here, but the biggest factor has to be the size of our turbos. it is a tiny snail when you compare it to some other ones. bmw did a smart thing by adding a turbo that is so small it feels like NA, not much noise, pretty much no lag and it adds nice amount of power (though underpowered in its potential - thats why people tune it).
