Question Does It Matter! At Vs Mt Doing A Turbo Upgrade!?

I'm about to buy this blue and white interior 08 335i. It has every thing I want but its not a 6MT.

I do plan on doing a lot to this car as well as a turbo upgrade. I'm wondering though would a 6MT better for power and strain.

yes manual would be better. if you are going to mod it hard you dont want manual anyway? i guess thats just me. but yes a MT will make things easier on you. if youre planning on some upgraded turbos and making excess of 500whp id save yourself the money ahead of time and go manual.

Either AT or MT, you will need to upgrade your transmission if you are going balls out looking push some serious numbers. Vishnu's car made 516rwhp. And my AT is slippin' already and I push about 430-440 to the wheels daily. Our motor seems to be solid, as long as you have right tune, supporting mods you will have alot of fun in this platform. Go search for all the thread recently posted by shiv@vishnu. Good stuff!

I personally would never waste my money modding an automatic...If 6MT is what you truly want, don't settle and keep searching...

Auto trans cant handle the power after the abuse.

MT woud just need a clutch upgrade.

It just hard to find a manual with what I want. Would the AT be ok for 450? Also how much rwhp exactly will a ASR or RB turbo upgrade and a Procede tune typically get me.

You can have 430-450WHP with methanol with stock turbo's and full bolt ons.

Upgraded Turbo's and methanol injection (Mandatory) will net you 500WHP+.

Automatic can handle stock turbo's. After the abuse of upgraded turbo's it will eventually need to be built. All of this depends on the abuse it takes and track use.

There is no clear cut and precise WHP number or length of time it will take for the Auto to show its signs of needed upgrades.

Well In the long run whenever I get that far 430-450. How much or what could be done to the transmission. Could it later be swapped to a 6MT? (I'm sure that would cost a bit 3k up idk)

Also It will be daily driven and not pined down everyday. Yeah I'll be taking it to the track to see what it can do but other than that...I just want a fast everyday driver when I hit the gas.

In a couple of months I should be ready to do some upgrades. I just havent chosen my route yet. I should have a little over 5k to get started...Any suggestions?

+1 autos seem to have trouble holding up once you have upgraded turbos.

That is uncharted territory. There is only one guy I know that is in search of upgrading his AT and hes not a member here.
The only guy on here with AT and upgraded turbo's I can think of off hand is Enrita and he hasnt upgraded anything yet as far as I know but he the transmission does need work.

Isn't LostMarines an AT with 512whp? He had to get this tranny rebuilt though I heard.

I was referring to him in that earlier post, yes his trans is on the fritz. I dont follow his car too much so idk if it was already rebuilt but it wasnt cheap IIRC.

Damn dude I cant win! I'm looking for a 2008 335i coupe under 40k miles for about 30-32k. (looking around 34k I have been talking them down)
Also loaded sport package nav and so on....just about loaded. I have one person on a 08 AT 335i blue and white 37,000 miles...fully loaded for 31,750. WHAT TO DO!

I have to call tomorrow and find out but if the 07 does have an oil cooler would it be ok?

FWIW, hotrod, oldbooter, georgesmooth, terry, AND lostmarine all run automatics. AFAIK, that means 5 of the 6 fastest/quickest 335s on dragtimes are autos (the manual would be Shiv's).

A few of them are reporting tranny slippage... but these are guys that live at the dragstrip, constantly launching on drag radials or slicks on extremely sticky tracks.

What is that exactly and how much did that cost.

I love this blue and white but im worried the auto wont hold well but if something can be done to an AT for 2k or something...Ill deal with it and make it better!

I just am not sure

I think Level 10 is a company that rebuild/upgrade transmissions.....Other than that, I don't know too much about that company.....I read that on N54tech I think.....
