Might have to get rid of my E90 to save my dog!
Well, I love this car more than any other than I've had but, I just got laid off due to corporate downsizing and now, my dog was just diagnosed with cancer( squamous cell sarcoma in his nasal passage). We caught it early but,, he needs 19 radiation treatments at around $12k. I'll do whatever I can for him but, might need to sell .

I have to agree. The most humane action is to put him down out of love. The chance for his survival is not great If it requires that many treatment. Also if you are in financial straights, it is prudent and wise to think of the living, ie. your family.

My heart goes out to you Mike -
I have been a pet owner for many years. Ive had 2 Great Dane's, 1 Irish WolfHound, 1 Saint Bernard, 1 Rottweiler, & 1 Neopolitan Mastiff, not all at the same time mind you. In terms of cats, 3 Abyssinian's, 1 Bengal. It is so so hard to lose a pet. All of my large dogs died very young, they don't tend to have long life spans. Usually 10 years or less. I have 1 Abby, & he is still around, he suffered a bowel perf a few years ago. I spent nearly $13k in treatment. It was a long & tedious process. Looking back, I'm not sure I would go through with it again. Modern medicine can really do wonders, but only you will know if it is worth it or not. I lost my Bengal this summer. I brought him into the Vets on a Tues. We, myself & the Vet, thought he was not going to make it out of the office that day. Long story. Oscar was suffering from thyroid & heart problems. I brought him home, he was so sick. I knew that evening it wasn't fair to him to prolong his suffering. I went into work on Wed knowing that after, I would have to bring him over to the vets to be put down. It is the worst feeling imaginable. I must say, if we could only be so lucky to pass away in such a peaceful manner. I know we could have allowed Oscar to live for a bit more time. I'm sure with additional meds & treatments he could have gone on for a little time. But, I just couldn't do that to him - he had been such a loyal companion for many years - I could not let him continue in pain. It seemed selfish to me. Please understand - each person has their own view on this - and no one is right or wrong. I'm so sorry you are even having to deal with this. I hope for the best for you and your dog. I hope my post does not come across was being preachy - certainly not meant to be - just wanted to pass on my experiences. Regards Frank |

This thread is showing real sacrifice, not many people, heck not anyone I know would ever consider trading in there car let alone an M3 to save a dog but if that's what choice he's left with then give him some credit for trying to save it in the first place and he's not adding it in every line for a donation just a little tip at the end and how he would appreciate it. Good luck bro, hope you get some good fortune and get to keep both! Just don't transport the dog in the ///M though! |

I might sell my car to do a lot of things, to include paying for vet care if I thought it best. What I wouldn't do is ask someone else to pay for that vet care so I could keep a material object. I see no sacrifice in the OP at all. Didn't say he's selling the car, he's saying he may have to if we don't help pay for the dog's care. Nor is he asking for advice (though many offered it) on if the treatment would be prudent. I'm primarily against soliciting for money for any cause on this site. It's a place to discuss cars and issues related to cars and that's how it should stay. Don't construe it do be a lack of sympathy regarding the dog. It's just not a direction we need to go and eventually it just becomes a flame war on whether or not the solicitation is a scam or legit and that's a waste of time. If nothing else the Mods should move it to an "Off Topic" section. Last edited by BigHat; 09-05-2011 at 01:35 PM.. |

When it comes to a dog, you need to make several personal boundaries before taking it home as a puppy. (or adopting). Before I ever purchase a dog, I set a personal boundary that I will not pay anything above $4000 to save its life. While that seems very harsh, it is reality that during your 70 year life, you will have 5-10 dogs.
While it is very difficult to accept, my advice to you is that you go purchase a puppy. The puppy will keep you happy through the hard time of letting the old one go. Oncology (cancer studies and treatment) is one of the most profitable practices. It takes advantage of the now common nature of the disease and increases the prices of treatment to levels that are completely unrealistic and arbitrary. Vets are notorious for diagnosing cancer and making a ridiculous living out of it. Sorry, but I would never give up a car for a dog. I would just accept having to downsize the car because of losing your job. |

like was said above it is a very individual and difficult choice and i can see both sides. when you are in the situation you know what you are and arent willing to do and it becomes much more clear what is the best course of action.

so sad... i remember when i was younger my cocker spaniel got cancer on his lip. we had it removed two times but when it came back the third time we just decided to put him down. it was terrible for me and my parents. i never had brothers or sisters so he was a great friend and protector to me.
to this day, my parents refuse to get another dog cause they know how hard it is.

Sorry for your situation with the job and such.
Kind of surprised to consider $12k to save a dog's life. Might be best to put the dog down. Are there any guarantees that the radiation treatments will save the dog's life? |
