Winter Tyres - what speed rating?
I'm planning on sticking with the OE 18" sizes for winter tyres. For the Falken EuroWinters that I want, there seems to be a choice of 94V or 91H. Same price, same availability.
Does it make a difference? H rated are good for up to about 100mph, and most wintger tyres seem to be H rated too. I can't see me going over 100 in the summer, let alone in winter - is there any benefit to the 94V?

The limits are worded as:
H: For vehicles with a speed capability not exceeding 210 Km/h (130 mph) V: For vehicles with a speed capability not exceeding 240 Km/h (149 mph) So whilst you might not want to do more than 130 in the snow! you might be invalidating your insurance to fit lower rated tyres. Also I noted that the tyres have different load ratings: A 91H is a tyre capable of carrying a load of 615kg to the above speed limit, and the 94V is a tyre capable of carrying a load of 670kg to the 149mph load. If there is no price difference I would go for the higher speed and load rated tyres. |

I see what you're saying about the insurance, and that was my thinking too - however, the genuine BMW winter wheel/tyre sets they sell are mostly H rated, and I'm sure there's a listing on the door panel for a H rated tyre.

A lower rating at h 130mph is not uncommon on winters. Often in germany you would find a Vmax 210kph sticker on the dash after getting new winters fitted by a garage - so it's not unusual. As long as you inform your insurer it shouldn't matter.
