usb/ iphone question

Hi there, I have an e92, 330D MSPORT HIGHLINE, 2009 with professional nav (HDD version).

I seem to have a usb connector in the glove box and no 3.5mm jack. Also in the centre compartment I have a 3.5mm jack and no USB socket.

I get that I can connect my iphone4 to the 3.5mm jack and it will play music via the aux function.

When I connect my ip4 to the usb using the iphone4 usb cable (that which came with the iPhone) my display on the dash shows No USB device connected, do I need a special cable for this?

I don't really want the snap in, as i would have to remove my iPhone bumper each time I want to connect.

Apologies if this is in the wrong place in the forum, just finding my feet both with the car and the forum.

AFAIK, the usb port located in the glove box is only for software updates and transferring music files from memory stick to the HDD.
It won't play music from your iPhone, otherwise why offer USB connectivity as an option?

oops-beaten to it
