Are non-Bmw sensors as good as the real thing?

I need two front ABS sensors as the wires were clipped when I changed my springs, the thing is, my mechanic (non-bmw) told me the sensors HAVE to be bmw and a non-genuine part wont do.

Has anyone any experience with this? I ask because there are sensors on Ebay for 30 quid each and the offical sensors are 70 quid each......

Not sure, but you could try to find an official one at a scrapyard. There's some for around £30 on ebay.
