What NOT to do to your car!

Newbies to this forum frequently ask about the first few essential mods they should make. Sometimes mods get out of control, but this is not a "poor man's mods out of control" topic.

Cheap or expensive, style and taste are subjective. But somehow on this forum, no matter how ugly something is, or how much the modification ruins the engineering of the car, someone is supporting these mistakes. Why?

That made me think we could use a thread like this.

Let me start. Do not do this to your car!

Mount the front license off to the side. Symmetry rules.

How about adding stick-on vents.

OR even worse, putting "M" emblems on a non-M car. Your not fooling anyone.

OP are you talking about something like this? I don't think it looks any worse than having the license plate smack dab in the middle.

Do you think the JB e90 (last pic) plate looks better? Rather than tie it down like this guy or drill holes, I'd much rather pop out that plastic cap thing and stick a mount in it.

What do you mean. BMW puts M logos on non M cars. I saw a 1 series with 1M on the trunk, before there was a real 1M. I wouldnt do it. And never put fluorecent anything on a car.

The only M logos on non-M cars are for M rims, M steering wheels, and M door sills. Basically parts. I've never heard of BMW factory putting the M logo on the trunk of non-M cars. Did you see this at the dealer? If not, don't know why you wouldn't just realize the owner did it himself.

That is EXACTLY what I'm talking about!

And no, not the last pic either.

You seem to be contradicting yourself. Style and taste are subjective but all of the things you mention are your own opinion, and your opinion does not make them automatically ugly.

I second this. In regards to the fooling people, what about non M cars with m3 kits? Why is there such a big market for aftermarket parts when conformity is the only way to go? It's all a matter of personal preference and I think that if we were a bit more open-minded about differences, there would be less flaming on forums but then again, everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

I think the Work Meisters look SICK with those tires.

Also, based on this thread I decided to order a RHO plate holder and mount my plate on the tow hook. Thanks for bringing it up !

Yeah, I don't see anything wrong with his setup. No insane camber, mild stretch, and high quality wheels.

what's wrong with mtech? you can get that as a factory option on non-N cars. it's just when you have a 3xx and put a m3 badge on the trunk you become a d-bag trying to pass yourself off as something you are not. iirc in europe (maybe it was asia) they put a generic M badge without series designation (ie M3) on non-N cars with M package; that's standard out of the factory.

personally think it's less of a issue of conformity vs a issue of passing yourself off as something you are not. It's like buying a Toyota MR2 and modding it to look like a Ferrari. Once you put that Ferrari badge on your MR2, you're endorsing delusions of grandeur.

I didn't say anything about mtech, did I? o_o

On a different note, I saw a Acura 3.2 TL with a BMW front end...

Most of the people with side mounted plates have them that way as BMW didn't provide a mounting point on the front bumper. So instead of drilling the front bumper why not buy a plate mounter that uses the tow hook point. Hence the off centered plate and no need to drill.

Anyways my most hated mod is those who put 22-24 in rims on a muscle car.

Don't put those little fake vent port circles on your fender.

Yes- there's an e90 in my town that has this. It's AWFUL. I'll try to get a picture of it some time.
