E92 335D Fuel Economy
Hey guys,
I have had my 2007 e92 335D for a week and 900 miles now, and I am not overwhelmed by the fuel economy! I was expecting mid 30s from normal driving and high 30s low 40s cruising at 70mph, but even nursing the car im struggling to get 30mpg unless on a motorway, where it gets about 35-36. Does this seem normal? IF not, what can I do to improve the economy, could it be something like the air filter? For reference, I am only getting 3-4mpg more than my 2002 170k mile E46 330i being driven in a similar manner. My friend's 2007 e60 535D gets about 10mpg more and i know he drives harder! His is remapped though. Will the Evolve remap help much? What about resetting the ecu so that it learns my driving style? Thanks guys, Tom. PS the car has 52k on the clock, never missed a service etc and is in very good condition.

I hammer it everywhere within reason and sense and it gets about 35
Somethings up with yours. maf, air filter, rough idle... Maybe reset the gearbox What do the revs settle at in d? Does it change up straight away it hang onto revs? Baby it and it will do 40 mpg on a run. Steady motorway on long journeys I've had 44 mpg. |

do you have any comments on sub 30mpg when nursing it? Gearbox sometimes holds revs at low throttle input but not always

Reset gearbox/throttle adaptions (search here) and check the coolant temp via the hidden menu - could well be EGR thermostat failure. Again loads of info here.

Take no notice of the OBC readout unless you can compare it to a proper measurement. The OBC is adjustable in the hidden menu's if you want it to be accurate. I haven't had mine long enough to check my consumption properly yet. Mike |

i spend a lot of time on the motorway and am getting 38mpg ave. With it reset on the mway and cruise at 70 i get between 45 and 47 mpg. Lowest my mpg has been is 33.6 during the winter months and a lot of town driving.
As others have said may be issues with you stat, maf etc. |

I was on the m6 today and remembered this thread
Reset my mpg which has been hovering around 35 for ages now. It was them speed limited 40, 50 60mph loads of slow moving traffic and then some 70-80mph all the way home. Was at 51.3mpg by time i left the m-way. Maybe you were having a DPF regen. I've noticed my mpg needle drop to 30mpg and fluctuate when it happens. Then it just sits on 50 most of the time. |

i have just nipped to asda and back with my odb2 reader plugged in to see what the maf etc looks like:
Coolant went up to 92 at one point, boost went up to 1.3 the highest i saw it but i was mainly driving @ 35mph with the cruise on in drive. I averaged 28.5mpg. I know driving my 330i this way it would have seen about 28mpg, so im REALLY not happy! I did the gearbox reset and it did seem smoother and changes up earlier, but it still sometimes doesnt change up when it should, got to 3.5k RPM at one point with about 10% throttle input! THis was up hill, but i know i could happily have gotten up this in 2 gears higher as I have done when in manual mode. What's the next thing to investigate guys? EDIT For reference this was about 12 miles

I think thats the problem, it should never get to 3.5k in D unless you burry the throttle.
Mine changes at around 2k pootling along. Settles around 1.4k RPM... in D. The high rev thing, could be cured with a gearbox software update, or it will need a new box. |

Mine averaged 18mpg for ages. I tried really carefully ONCE and achieved High 50's. I had photos from the journey to the petrol station. The 50's was on the way and back in the teens on the way home.

also with the gear box update, is that something only a BMW dealer can do (if so what are the cost) or should any good BMw Indi have the software? as mine tends to hang onto the gears than normal? I will try to do the rest at some point after ive had the seals on the turbo pipe replaced this Saturday by local indi. |

It only seems to hold it on one hill near my house, which you have to go up in first in a manual, but you can still change at 2k rpm! It is like a 30% gradient. It otherwise changes at about 1500rpm

I had a 335i e92 as a courtesy car last year and that returned better economy than my 330i! I could have at least had a better sound track!

I do a 20 mile commute into cambridge at about 50/60mph, and then about 30 miles skirting around town. I get 33 like that. Its kinda hard to drive a 335d hard because if you do your license will be gone by the end of the week. I managed 43 on a run to hull and back at a steady 70/80.
