Oil Cooler

I am doing a oil cooler retrofit. I have all the parts minus a few fittings.

I ended up going with the Setrab 625. I plan on mounting it in front of the radiator, right behind the grills. Will there be any issue with mounting with the fittings facing up as opposed to them facing down like on AR Design's kit?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Shouldn't be an issue will. Hey good luck with the install bud, and tell us all how it goes.

Mounting one radiator in front of another is not optimum..there is a reason why the OEM cooler sits in the front of the wheel well.

Thank you for your input but that is not what I am asking about here. Until I see anything more than a negligible difference with mounting it in front of the radiator that is were it is going. It is how I mounted the trans cooler on my Barracuda and have had no issues. That one is also mounted to the radiator .

Now back to the info I am looking for, can anyone tell me if having the fittings facing up will negatively affect the flow?

already did one about a year ago and decided to move the cooler down into a lower duct in the bumper for a little cleaner look , glad to hear someone else is doin one !!! good luck ! here is the link , http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=464276

just to answer your question , there will be no adverse affect in have the fittings facing down sidewayes backwords ect. just to add a side note , the guy above stament about placement is true, i found that out with testing thats why i have moved mine from where it is in the photos !!

Thanks for the help. What kind of difference did you find in your testing? Where do you have it mounted at now and how?

When I was doing my senior design project my group worked on the cooling system for the Chevy Volt. We had radiators placed in front of other radiators and while it did reduce the efficiency of them it wasn't enough to worry about.

If you have numbers by all means share them. Right now mounting it in front of the radiator for me will serve it's purpose while allowing for a clean install.

Will Just stay on topic by responding only to those who have something positive, and relevant to add to what you are trying to discuss. Trust me, there are tons of these guys who are trying to troll-bait you into an argument that will get you infracted/banned.

One of the racing teams mounted it in front of the fmic. I forgot which one. Pretty sure they claimed it didn't make much of a negative difference. Looked pretty cool too

Which racing team did that? ..

Every racing team I have seen has always mounted either single or dual cores in parallel in the wheel wells..I cant imagine a racing team would want to throw 260 degree oil heat into an intercooler..when making power is their main goal.

If you are running dual why would you run them in parallel as opposed to in series? While Delta T across both will be different the Delta T for the system should be greater when run in series and not parallel.

well i used a Earls core , the clearence between the back of the cooler and the front of the radiator was not enough to let the hot air vent properly. I have an M-tech front bumper and i dedicated the drivers side brake duct opening as the oil cooler vent , i have seen up to 35 degrees drop in temps on daily driving. and its a MUCH cleaner look having the cooler out of the front grill !!! i fabricated 2 mounts out of metal to mount the cooler in a vertical position rite in front of the vent.

Update

So today I got the car torn apart and saw something I wasn't too happy about. I realized I would have to hack up the front end up to get to cooler to fit in front of the radiator. Since that is not going to happen some of you will be happy knowing it will be going in the wheel well. I got some aluminum angle stock tonight and will be mounting it tomorrow. Pics to follow.

I await the pics. I don't have an oil cooler either and I am contemplating doing the retrofit as well.

Go for it! The hardest parts are switching the filter housings and mounting the cooler. I'll try and get pictures up ASAP
