Portable Air Compressor
I'm thinking of picking up a portable air compressor to allow me to check / top up tire pressures as I go around helping family swap on their winters and figured it doesn't hurt to have one in the trunk anyway. Does anyone have any good suggestions on which one to get and where? I don't mind spending a bit more if it means I get a decent one that can last a bit (heard you really get what you pay for on cheap ones).

I have this one. It's fairly quiet, portable and fills at a quick rate. The gauge on it is not very reliable but I use my digital tire gauge anyway.

Get a VIAIR 85P. Great portable compressor. Makes anything from Crappy Tire seem uh, crappy!
Best source is eBay. Get it shipped to USAddress or make sure the seller will ship USPS. |

Yeah I was just reading up on this one. Seems pretty decent. Wish there was a Canadian retailer for it (can't seem to find one) as I'm rather weary of eBay purchases.

I have been using a slime kit with a compressor and a canadian tire 800A powerbox with compressor, both take a very long time to inflate a tire. Last edited by Glim; 11-02-2011 at 01:45 AM.. |

Yeah, I thought about this as well but the price didn't make much sense to me after doing some searching online for decent compressors. The sealant supposedly has a shelf life as well.

VIAIR 85P is quiet and fast. Would take about 3 minutes to inflate an 18" tire from 0 to 30PSI.

Over all the BMW M-Mobility System is pretty slick. Yes the tire sealant has a shelf life but the pumps are what make the system so great. It fits nicely in your trunk and is in a tidy self contained package. ECS Tuning |

To be honest, I don't remember since I've only used it a couple times...but since I don't remember hating it, it can't be bad.

Just ordered a VIAIR 85P, will post a comparison against the Canadian Tire Slime Compressor and the Eliminator 800A powerbox's compressor during the upcoming winter tire install this weekend or next (whenever it arrives.) |

I might just order one as well since most reviews say it's one of the better ones on the market right now.

It's not as fast as larger compressor with tank set up, but it has never seemed to me that it's taking forever to fill a tire, even when the tire pressure was about 2psi thanks to a schrader valve needing to be tightened and filling to 35psi.

Plugged it into the dc port on an 800a eliminator power box and filled four winter tires in about ten minutes, they are ready to mount tomorrow, it is a lower hum than the slime and eliminator power box compressors, the connection is better, it's slightly quieter and six times faster. Plugged in the air mattress adapter and it could fill a twin mattress in about ten to fifteen minutes, have not tried the ball fill adapter yet. |
