ipod integration, explanation for a dummy please
I know theres various threads on here regarding how to set up for using an ipod with the sound system, but all the talk of re coding etc is completely lost on me.
Ok,,,so my car has idrive and prep for cd changer. Ive attatched a jpeg of the exact spec of my car, please can someone explain to me the cheapest and easiest way for me to get my ipod to work via the screen on the dash so i can change tracks and stuff from the steering wheel controls. Is there something i can buy that just plugs in, and if so, where does it plug in and is this something i can do myself?

Unless I am wrong you cannot use your iDrive to control your iPod on your particular car.
The only way to use it is to buy a 3.5mm - 3.5mm lead and plug the iPod into the 3.5mm jack in the armrest. Newer cars have a USB slot which can control the iPod. I cannot see a USB slot on your spec. |

The easiest and cheapest thing is to get a 3.5/3.5mm cable, plug it into the armrest jack and just use your iPod as normal...
All the threads you have read are for cars with have built in USB slots and iPod integration. Your car was built before this happened. If you have too much cash which you want to get rid of, consider the Alpine stereo upgrade which will dramatically improve your sound whatever sound source you use. |

You are looking at £400+ to get the iPod interface fitted by BMW. The interface will be very similar to the one you get when you play MP3 CDs

Essentially you want a 2nd hand BMW ipod interface for around £65, a person to rearrange the fibres in your car to add the cd changer prep into the loop and then finally someone to code that cd changer prep.
That latter should cost around £45. So £45 + cost of the unit ( £45-100 ) This will all give you control of the ipod on the idrive screen and through your remote controls etc.

Thanks for the replies, I think I'll just leave as is, I can't justify spending heaps, I'll just use the aux and change tracks on the ipod

Well it cost me £80 all in to have a full working set up. Don't have to worry about charging or getting distracted from the road..
£80 isn't exactly a heap.. Just need to wait for an interface to come on ebay, one comes on around every week.

I already have coding for mp3 cd's etc - and a cd changer in the glove box - if I bought an ipod interface and plugged in instead of the cd changer - would that work?

Don't forget if you do the install yourself with something like the Dension or OEM interface you can recoup some of the outlay when you sell the car by removing and reselling the interface. Makes it a bit more affordable.
Second hand Dension 500's regularly make two thirds of their new price on ebay. |

If you buy the BMW interface, litearlly just plug the cd changer cable into that and then you're good to go. edit - bmw interface or dension, both will work out the box for you.
