***Official Bimmerpost Photo Contest #46: "In-between Places"
Official BimmerPost Photo Contest #46: "In-between Places"
BACKGROUND: I have always enjoyed Uta Barth's work of simplistic elements but beautiful concepts. One of my favorite series is her In-between Places series. Quote:
For this contest, submit your photos that captures the same element as Barth's work, a sense of being "in between" this world and another. No guidelines will be placed on what must be included in the photo but the out of focus technique should be used. Any photo that doesn't meet that requirement will not be included in the poll. NOTE: YOU MUST SHOOT OUT OF FOCUS IN CAMERA, NO ARTIFICIAL/POST PROCESS BLUR WILL BE ACCEPTED. Try to be as creative as you can be. Think about the elements you will be able to see while out of focus: light/dark, shapes, colors, and the arrangements of all those elements in the frame. Most importantly have fun doing it. Feel free to emulate one of her images if you are having trouble conceptualizing your own. This is a great way to get started and surely your own little variations will make the work your own. Here are some samples so you know what the concept is: IMPORTANT DATES: Entries must be submitted to this thread no later than Thursday, December 15th @ 11:59 PST. Voting begins the following day. VOTING: PLEASE READ! We are going to try out a new voting system. the 2 previous winners (Caspita & Chewy) along with myself will select 3 photos that we feel are the best and put them in a 1 vote only poll to choose a winner. RULES: 1. Any interpretation of the theme that falls within Bimmerpost.com rules is welcome. 2. You must be the person that took the photo. Previous photos are acceptable as long as you are the one that captured the image. 3. One submission per contest, and you cannot resubmit a photo that you've submitted before in a previous contest. 4. Images must be no larger than 800 px in any direction. Links to larger images are allowed but you must have one that is under 800 px for the poll. 5. All contestants must host their own pictures (which includes hosting them on Bimmerpost). 6. All images must have a title. 7. While post processing in Photoshop is allowed, adding or removing parts of the picture is not. In the event a photo is suspected to be "photo-chopped," the contestant will be asked to provide the original picture. Last edited by UdubBadger; 12-07-2011 at 06:29 PM.. |

I have a bad feeling about this voting method... but we'll see.
Btw, you should probably mention that artificially increasing the blur in post-processing will not be allowed.

we can always do the traditional voting if we want... I'm not gonna play dictator, I'd rather the bulk of us be in agreement on it. |

Love the theme! Can't wait to see some submissions. I have some ideas of what I want to submit, but I might decide to go out and take more so I have more options.
If I'm wondering whether a certain photo falls under the guidelines, am I permitted to post it for one of you but not count it as my submission? Or should I PM one of you guys for approval? |

Rather than still, OOF technique can't movement blur convey the same concept, like you know where you are, but you can't make out the landmarks clearly?

Thanks, Chewy and rodi.
(Does kind of make me queasy to look at it. I don't tolerate blurry well.)

personally, I feel that this is the perfect opportunity for rodi to post a nude of one of his hot female models.

Wolf, I think the key is to have everything out of focus... it appears your leaf is in focus here. Without that leaf, I think your submissions works.

Yep Chewy is correct. The goal is to relay some kind of message or concept through an out of focus image. In Uta's images, many are common places you'd see through out the day but when out of focus makes them seem like you aren't quite there, kind of like a blurry dream you just can't focus in on. After that initial "layer" (metaphorically speaking), the images that account for good sizing ratios of shapes, light/dark balance and so on and so forth will be the ones that begin to stand out from just the ones of random stuff shot out of focus with no real clear concept thought through.
