Ok so we (Chewy, Caspita and myself) have chosen our top 3, now you guys pick the winner.

Pick 1 photo only this time, all voting public as usual.

The poll will close in 3 days (appx 8:45pm Monday Dec 19th).

Notice we were able to move through this contest pretty quickly in this format.

Well we have discussed it several times, if people don't likey we can always go back (we even had another thread going a while back that Chewy started).


I thought this was pretty fair for the previous winners to choose 3. If you win you probably have some kind of knowledge of good photography so you're a good judge on what works and what is just "fluff" (not saying those who didn't make the final 3 submitted fluff by any means). I just think this keeps the voting honest is all; no playing favorites or popularity contests, no surprise wins by sensationalism, no 5 way ties that get broken by some last minute random vote for a photo that didn't even fit the theme. Just 3 strong photos pitted against the others that fit the theme well and show good photographic knowledge/skills.

Just my opinion.

just consider the 3 of us your elected officials using good judgement on your behalf. One of these photos I didn't personally like but it was my job to only choose 1 so it is a diverse pick, even coming from only 3 other people.

so each judge picked one? does that mean no other say on the other 2? that seems flawed...

not saying you made bad choices by any means, they definitely are the best of the best, but I do forsee future issues with this setup. But it works today.

and how does this apply for you 3 entering the contests? do you still judge your own, but with as much honesty as possible?

We had lists of top 3, compared them and most were repeat picks so it made it easier this time.

None of us entered coincidentally but I would say the rule stands as you can't enter your own contest anyway, if the other 2 enter they can't pick their own (if 2 of the other judges choose it then thats fine).

well thanks! But considering Barth's work is something out of focus we pass by on a daily basis.. I noticed that a antique rocking horse in my backyard is something you don't see everyday haha.. Completely understandable, great job on your submission along with the other two guys!

what if there are more than 3 top photos? sometimes we have contests with 25 submissions. surely there's a constant percentage of "top" images. maybe there should be the top 3 or top X%, whichever is greater?

Maybe we should just list all the entries and get one vote. I know it's too complex right... In all seriousness, there are two entries that didn't make "the cut" that i would have voted for over these 3.

it basically went like this

B had the most votes so it goes in, A had 2 votes so it goes in, then since H was highest on Caspita's list that wasn't already in, that made the last entry.

again, just trying it out to see what happens, nothing saying we have to do it forever or can't go back.

And thats fine, it's your opinion to have. Personally I saw absolutely no focus to that image (no pun intended). To me, it looked like he just went and shot the park outside his place. looking at intent, subject, light/dark ratios... I didn't see anything that I liked (and hopefully everyone here is big enough to hear both praise and criticism about their work without taking it personal).

However, if you or someone else saw brilliance in it, thats fine... art is subjective. If/when you were running the contest I would take your opinions and taste into account and know that there was reason behind you selecting or not selecting certain images as your top choices. If others in your group of judges agreed/disagreed it would confirm something that was either good or not so good.

There will be reasons why x and y got left out for sure, and there were more than just the 3 images I nominated that I thought were very good, but I chose what I thought were the best in my opinion.

because the list was pick your top 3 in ranked order.

H came be for I in his list. Same as why C & F were also left out.

Because A & B had both already been chosen it defaulted to the next highest ranked choice that hadn't been chosen.

I was thinking the same. I would have voted for Judd's, although I'm not sure it's really in the Barth style. But it was one of the better images here. (IMHO, of course.) Then again, I'm no art critic. Especially fuzzy art. :-)
