Were you deluded into thinking that Hawaii needs to be defended and sold as a desirable location? If so, rest assured it needs no defense or public relations effort.

I believe it had something to do with military transportation back in the day.

Why does Hawaii have interstate highways?
Any highway built under the auspices of the Federal Aid Highway Act of 1956 and funded by the federal governent is called an interstate highway, even if it doesn't cross state lines. In fact, there are many local routes that lie entirely within a single state funded by the Act. Hawaii has three interstates - H1, H2, and H3 - which connect important military facilities on the island of Oahu.

Yes... Hawaii is great... Our traffic sucks, our drivers don't know the difference between yield and merge, everything is more expensive.
http://www.kitv.com/video/22653261/detail.html Am I doing this right?

Oh, I can't forgot endless road work and potholes that come back within a week of being "repaired"

Yeah they stilll have the dumptrucks with hotmix asphalt in the back going around filling the potholes. And the traffic is the worst!

And hey I saw in Roundel, the BMWCCA magazine that the Hawaii Belt Highway on the Big Island where I lived for years is one of the top ten best driving roads in the nation!

Drive the road to Hana on Maui, it's breathtaking. Or drive up to the volcano(it's like haliakala or something), both are great roads

Haleakala. It means house of the sun. I rode a bike down that road once. I am flying back tonight for New Years! Will be in the ocean in less than 24 hours! I will catch some waves for all of you. Aloha!
