i had a feeling its some sort of adjustment but i have no idea how loose or tight i should have it

The adjustments are softer to harder .The softer it is the faster then bov will react and vent .If you maker it to stiff the bov will not vent correctly and cause surge .The best way to adjust it ,go wot till it blows off one quick shot after you let off with no surge.
