335i after 70.000 Miles
Hi everybody!
Because my budget is un sufficient to buy a new 335i model , I am forced to wait for the used one (max 3-4 years old) What can we expect of engine in 335i model which will have driven app. 70t/miles or more. Can we expect that will be endurance of this engines the same as in 330i model. And how reliable are gone be this ‘’twin-turbos’’ after 70t/miles. Tnx in advance. Bob |

I would have to venture to guess that 70k miles will be a piece of cake. you guys buy expensive autos and dont expect them to last longer then the warranty, I just dont get it, no faith in the car you chose. oh welll.

I'll have to wait for a couple of years/months, to see or read some posts about ''troubles'' with 335i. Otherewise I will stay on checked and reliable 330i model. tnx. |

No harm in being cautious of course, but I think you will hear those same kinds of horror stories about cars of all different makes and models. Lots of BMWs out there with 100k+ miles on them too. Some, like mine, have been almost problem free. (Knock on wood! )

its all about the previous owners treatment if you buy a CPO car or something with a limited warranty. If you manage to get lucky and pick up a car later on in the lease that was taken care of and had extra oil changes, then they will usually cause no big issues down the line.
For those that do the 'bare minimum service' (etc one oil change a year or 15k) and dont want to spend money on anything that breaks, obviously its going to wreck your wallet if you happen to get one. Lot of people around here drive them with the intention of 'oh well its a lease I don't give two shits about whoever else buys it'. Then there are the few that still go the extra mile even when it IS a lease. THOSE cars are the ones you look into buying. Many a 530 and 540 (E39) have passed through here on lease return...02 or 03 models with barely 20-25k on the clock, and pampered by their owners. They do sell for 25-35k used, but they are well worth it. Then there are some, including a lot of 3 series and X5s that I wouldnt go anywhere near. |

+1 - Very well said. I totally agree. I plan on keeping mine for a long long time. Have faith in it boys - these cars will last you a lifetime if you maintain them well. They are meant to be driven. We don't get to drive them the way they are meant to be driven. But why spend over $50k on a car if you are not going to keep it. I don't get it |

I worked at a very large dealer and we saw on a regular basis both smaller engined 3's and higher end M's come in with more than 150K on them with little repairs need post warranty. They aren't MBs or Audis----they will hold up

If history is a guide it will be the little stuff -- mostly electronics -- that cause problems down the pike. I would rather buy a used 335 with no electronic gadgets than a loaded 330.

Keep in mind a 70k used care will need AOLT of parts replaced to be even close to as tight as a new car(shocks/bushings ect). Not to mention all the creeks and rattles you will never fix. Just the thought reminds me of my 02 M3 I got with 38k miles and replaced the tranny at 54k miles at a cost to me of $9,000. I loved that car but it cost me $15,000 to own for a yr.

70,000 miles is nothing. I would expect all modern cars to go at least 150,000 miles without many problems. You should expect to replace a starter, alternator, battery and maybe shocks/struts. Other than that they should be fine.
In our work fleet we have multiple vehicles with miles in excess of 250,000 miles. Well maintained cars (and trucks) will last a very long time. |

The only problem I can see later on, probably more towards 100k miles is one or both turbos failing.
If people do not warm up their turbos or let them cool down a little before shutting them down then this can wear out the turbos. I would think that the BMW engine should be able to last a good while. My previous Audi S4 with Bi-Turbos ran great. I did have to replace my turbos at 120k miles but considering that I was chipped since 15k miles with track use I didn't see that as a problem. The engine ran great. Just don't go WOT while your turbos are cold and don't just shut your car off after driving it really hard, like at the track or something. By the way, I sold my '01 S4 with 185k miles this past Feb. No real major problems except the Turbos failing.

I would also never buy any BMW that was out of warranty simply because parts are too expensive and there is too much crap that can break IMO.
