N54 gets a new rear turbo- must read on why.... (pics)

This is not on the 335i, but a brand new 535i. The car has just over 100 miles on it and came in with a check engine light for turbo boost pressure too low. With little to no help from puma, we decided to expose the turbos...

I used a little vacumm machine to apply vacumm to the wastegates and they "appeared" to be operating correctly... Ended up taking all the intake/charge pipes off the turbos. Removed the exhaust, removed both front catalytic converters/downpipes to expose the exhaust side. Then I look at the wastegate valves inside the exhaust sided and see that the rear one has never fully closed (causing the low boost pressure faults by letting boost go out of the exhaust rather than thru the intercooler into the intake).

So I ordered another rear turbo and removed the bad rear one....... Seems like the wastegate was not adjusted properly from the factory but puma did not want me to do any adjustments to the actuator rod and they wanted to inspect it themselves. I have a feeling this isnt the only cause like this out there so just a heads up for you guys.....

on to the pics (sorry it was from my camera phone)-

The turbo is stamped as t03. im assuming its a garret??

The downpipes/cats

535i exhaust-

Front turbo- normal wastegate operation

Rear turbo- wastegate not fully closing

The wastegate looks bigger than the turbo.. haha

On the bench-

Smaller than the ones on my 1jz-gte in my lexus sc300...

This turbo is a rear one off an E92 a few weeks ago someone else did, forgot the reason-

Some evo owners are running as much as 20psi+ on their stock turbos... I wonder if these little babies can handle the same???????

They run a lot more than that. With meth or race gas they will spike the stocker turbo up to 30 psi for as long as the turbo can flow that. How much boost a turbo can generate deals with the flow capabilities of the compressor wheel and the engine its feeding. Shaft speeds do become an issue, but as far as what pressure that might happen, it again depends on the turbo and engine combo. Also the Evo turbo is very, very large for a stock unit...it will flow as much as both of the N54's turbos combined, if not a bit more.

Nope. Pretty quiet in comparison.

Oddly enough, the muffler tips look bigger on the 535 compared to the 528. It almost looks like they are using a spin off of a 545 or 550 muffler to handle the flow duties for the turbos.

I didn't know other BMW dealerships had the same kind of floor tiles as we do

And that wastegate is definetly looking weird. How hard was it to get the downpipes out of the car? I'm going to be fabbing a set up for my own car over the summer..so I was just looking for some kinda time estimates so I can prepare myself.

Very cool post. So how hard is it to remove these downpipes? I'm thinking that there is very little clearance under there if you don't have a lift to work on.

The downpipes werent all that bad to remove... Theres a bracket that holds the 2 downpipes together and is connected to 2 bolts on the transmission bellhousing. I unplugged the o2 sensors to make things easier. The pipes are held to the turbos by a v-band type clamp which is a little bit of a pain to get off of the d/p to get the pipe out. Then with some wiggling around they are on the ground..

Even though I have NO idea what I was actually looking at in those pictures they were still pretty cool. So that's what our turbos look like!...right? Excuse the ignorance, as it comes naturally and cannot be stopped.

Nice clinker tile guys :rocks:

Did PUMA tell you to replace the rear turbo? I'm curious how you knew which turbo was causing the low pressure.

I had the DP's and turbo's off of an E92 once hunt'n an oil leak. Not as bad as I though it was gonna be. How bad was the E60?

BTW, the oil leak was a pinched O-ring on the oil return tube at the block for the rear turbo. Car had 1200 miles a

Never mind, after actually LOOKING at the pictures I see how you knew it was the rear turbo. Makes ya wanna drop the DP's on your own car and see if the wastegates are fully closing. Saturday project!!

Riverside BMW and New Century BMW uses the same tiles. The tiles are very expensive and are imported from Germany. Contractors say you can get the tiles here in the US for a better price but BMW NA wants all newer dealer buildings to use this particular tile from Europe.

questions about exhaust photos

[QUOTE=1clean335i;1049105]This is not on the 335i, but a brand new 535i. The car has just over 100 miles on it and came in with a check engine light for turbo boost pressure too low. With little to no help from puma, we decided to expose the turbos...

on to the pics (sorry it was from my camera phone)-

The turbo is stamped as t03. im assuming its a garret??

Sorry for being a newbie, but this seemed like a reasonable thread to ask questions since I don't really know what I am looking at:

1) I'm assuming that the two "short" tubes are mounted directly upstream from the "long" exhaust tubes. Is the middle part of the "short" tube the catalytic converter section?

2) Around the center of the "long" exhaust tubes is a wider diameter section. What is its purpose?

3) You show pictures labeled front and/or rear turbos. I'm confused where the turbos are actually located. Are they immediately downstream of the engine exhaust, under the hood, or are they downstream near the rear of the car?

THanks
