TORN! R8 or 360 F1
Guys...
Looking to get a weekend ride (the M3 has been magical, but it's paid off and I have come into a considerable bonus and it's time to play). I am looking at an 08 V8 R8 with 7800 miles, R-tronic, nav/backup, Silver on Grey. $95000 or 2001 360 F1 Red on Beige with 8000miles $83000 The R8 is in S.Naples FL and I'm headed down there to test it this weekend (happened to coincide with Monday/Tuesday business in FL). The other is from a dealership that my coworker bought his Ferrari from...Marshall Goldman. He raves about them and their professionalism, but my issue is with the maintenance of the 360. I have heard horror stories about the mid engine prancing ponies and I am hesitant, but the price is on point. I have dreamed of owning a Ferrari since I was a kid and this 360 would truly fulfill the "Red Ferrari wet dream". The R8 just seems more practical. An Audi dealership is down the road from where I live, all modern features, AWD, plenty of "wow" factor, and less problems. But.....the other is....a FERRARI...

The 360 was my least favorite of the V8 ferraris over the past 15-20 years. If you could fork out the extra change for a 430 then i would do that over the r8. But between those two, im going for the daily drivability of the r8.

I wouldnt say anyone overates them. There both beautiful cars, just not the most powerful in their classes. Maybe he isnt looking for some insane performance numbers, just a dream exotic that he has always wanted to cruise in.

I've set a certain budget for myself and decided on it coming down to these two rides.
I like the choices and yes I can go for the 430 or V10, but if it were between just these two cars what would you suggest? Thats all I'm asking.

Like Rekrul, can we vote none of the above? You can get a brand new R8 for not that much more with full warranty. I think you'd be crazy to spend that kind of money on a 4 year old R8. Also, if I want "practicality", I'd be looking at a lightly used Turbo over a lightly used R8. As for the Ferrari, not a huge fan of either the 360 or the 430, but really like the 458 redesign. I guess I'd probably pick the 430. Also, that a damn old car if that's your primary car, and not a weekend/show/garage car.
Edit: I just priced out a brand new R8 tiptronic for $130k. If you can afford a 4 year old used car for $95k, you should be able to afford $130k for a brand new one, but that's just me.

Then between those two, the r8. The 360 is a bit outdated looking, which is rare to say about any ferrari, because i still love the 355. The r8 still looks amazing and exotic while being very livable day to day. So go for the r8.

I would say the R8 as the 360 is already 3 generations behind...

Both cars are a good chunk of change, I'd go with the R8 for a few reasons:
- Modern features - Reliability - Practicality (even as a weekend car there is more to give up with the Ferrari) - I personally feel the R8 has more "wow factor" than a 360 which can really look dated (and not in a good way) from some angles (esp. interior) If you are a speed junkie there are many aftermarket kits that retain the drivability and reliability of the R8 and will still blow the doors of near anything you'd ever encounter in your travels |

First of all, I don't get why people are saying pay up for a 430. The 430 is at least $50k MORE than the 360...OP is in the $80k market as implied in his post, not a 430 market. The R8 V10 is also ALOT more expensive than $80k. Why suggest this? I mean when you bought your M3 for $70k range, I take it most of us were in no way considering buying something in the $112 range...
Anyways: I say buy the R8... You get a warranty with it, that itself is worth it. Plus, the servicing on the R8 is nowhere near as expensive as the 360, and you wouldn't need the 30k, 60k servicing on the R8 for a good 5 years whereas the 360 may be near it's major servicing schedule. Servicing costs aside, I think the standard 360 F1 is very dated in technology and performance. The transmission is 2 generations removed from the current Audi DSG, and the car is not faster than the R8. The ONLY 360 model I would consider buying will be the 360 Challege Stradale, but then again, you can't pick that up in the $80k range. The 360 F1 was revolutionary and years ahead of it's time in 1999-2001, but we're in 2012 already, R8 is king at the price range. (Though the GTR and Z06 woudl be a better performance buy) good luck, and since you're in the DC area, I'd love to see it whichever one you buy. Last edited by mdosu; 03-08-2012 at 01:32 PM.. |

Only you know your budget but if it was me I would be really afraid of the maintenance of a 12 year old Ferrari ! Also the R8 is a really nice car but since it's a V8 , it wont perform that much better than your M3 and also it is silver , I would never buy a silver car ! My advice , find yourself a nice 911tt , it has all the practicallity of the R8 , a lot more performance then both and best reliability of its class !!

The 360 is coming due for a clutch at around 15k miles for the F1 and major service based on time so keep that in mind. Plan on 3k-5k a year on service. The 430 is less for service since it no longer uses timing belts.
