getting new e90 for college..
i've been driving my X5 for a year now (i put 16k miles on it since last sept since my daily trip to school was 52 miles round-trip) and im starting to feel that my cars about to break down soon and me and my parents both have to pay alot of $$ for parts that is not covered by the extended warranty.
battery alternator died 3 weeks ago, had to pay $400, and when i picked up my car from the dealership and started to drive home, coolant low message appeared on dash, and smoke started to come out of the engine...dealer told me there was a leak in the valve somewhere and it was leaking on the exhaust and that was causing the smoke. im not sure if they siliconed the bitch up for temp. fix instead of replacing it with entire one, i dont think the car's gonna last too long. so my parents decided to buy me a new car for college (gonna be attending rutgers in new brunswick) which is going to be a e90 335i. i have plans for modifications like kwv2 coilovers, m6 replica rims, procede, exhaust, etc and i was wondering, what is it like driving up in NJ? (new brunswick area) because i know for sure that its nothing like the roads down here in south florida from what i heard of. i want to be extra cautious about my driving habits since its gonna be a somewhat different experience. |

Must be nice!
The only thing my parents did for me was a $200 check and a hand shake. And, that's after I put myself through school. Congrats on the car.

Well I dont know about the roads there but I heard NJ drivers and cops are crazy. G'luck in college and congrats on the car.
PS_ do European Delivery!!! It'd be cool to go on a vacation before you start college. That way you get a vacation AND a brand new car. |

if you're getting a E90, might as well get a 335xi since you'd be seeing snow up here.

Kev is totally right.... I went to Rutgers myself and lived in east brunswick for 2 years and let me tell you I almost lost my life several times in an 88 mustang. Granted a bmw would handle better. RWD doesnt work in the snow in NJ. My friend who lives in central jersey has a 528i.... it's as if he doesnt have a car when it snows... I'm picking up 335xi myself in a few weeks.

oh yeh...and those who say...oh well when it snows you can take the family SUV.... are you going to drive an SUV all the times there MIGHT be snow later in the day? If you want a 365day per year car go for the xi.

I wouldn't do European delivery especially if you're getting ready for college...you have to pack and move in to your dorm..so I would forget that idea..
TO be honest why do you need a car if you're gonna be dorming? I heard New Brunswick (in parts) is not so safe and parking your car on the street or school parking is going to be dangerous. Just food for thought. College tends to be rough on cars, BMW is no exception. |

I have had two RWD vehicles while living in snowy places (Madison, WI and Boston, MA). As long as you drive carefully and use snow tires, you will survive ok. However, if you're getting a new car, by all means get an xi, which would give you more traction in the winter. I'm starting clinical clerkship in July, so I'm not going to gamble with the RWD anymore.

Wow thats so wierd, that sounds exactly like my deal, got a 4.4 x5 in sept put 10k miles on it through feb of this year, batt died had to be towed. Radiator cracked another 1k. Dad got tired of the shit and baught me a new e90 so it will have warrenty while im at school so he dont have to worry bout shit. Thats cool tho man good luck. You will miss your x5 especially if you have 4.4 or bigger.

The only difference driving in the NE versus Florida is the snow (and more potholes). Jersey drivers are god awful, but from what I've seen Florida people are right up there.
As far as the Xi... imo a RWD bmw will do just fine, AWD would be better but it's not a huge deal. Having said that if you have never driven in the snow/ice you will have a big learning curve either way. Also, if it snows/ices.... you will be on campus right? Just don't drive on those days. People living on campus rarely use their cars anyway, I'd wager your car will spend most of the time in the long term parking lot. |

the roads in brunswick aren't that great...some places are downright horrible...you can get away with not having an xi if you get a winter tire set imo. if you live on campus watch, people are key happy.
i think jersey drivers are some of the best drivers out there. but we're assholes too. |

i actually go to rutgers new brunswick for a full year now.... i wouldnt recommend leaving a 40+ car on the street there next thing you'll know the car will be there but it'll be empty and no rims... i dont mean to scare you or anything but new brunswick isnt the safest place for nice cars thats why i take the bus.....

i think new jersey drivers are downright miserable... when my sister was driving the e90, this dumbass pickup truck decided to not check his blindspot and wheel my front bumper...
and again at the mall, a douche managed to scrape my rear fender b/c they rotated the wheel a tad bit too much when backing out... i've traveled and drove in many states... and new jersey drivers have got to be the worst, careless, and wreckless... let the flames begin~ |

that's another thing...parking in one of ru's lots or in brunswick on the street, unless you get a place off campus in a community...i'll be surprised if nothing happens to your car your time there...from keying to theft

I would have to agree with most of the points you make. For me, its almost a tie between NJ and MA (Boston, specifically). The main difference is that people in Boston will cut you off simply because they weren't even paying attention and just "assume" someone is going to let them cut over. The NJ driver will go out of their way to cut you off, and probably give you "the finger" in the process. They are by far the most RUDE drivers on US roads.
