I have had both, depends on what you want. I loved the space in the A3. I don't much care for the new GTI look but I like the last body style a lot. They are both great cars, just the Audi, since it is an Audi, is a little more luxurious. I just wish they had the 2dr A3 in the states.

I would lean towards the GTI
My wife just got an '07 GTI a few months ago--candy white w/dsg. It's an absolute blast to drive and looks really nice with the OEM body kit (which we just added). I really like the A3, but couldn't really justify paying more for the extra luxury features/materials and status in that type of car. If someone were giving me the car, I'd take the A3 in a heartbeat--but faced with the choice of buying one or the other, I'd save the money and get the GTI. Also, we were looking for more of a toy/tuner car and the GTI seemed sportier and more economical for that role.

i've always been a golf fan. i'm going with the GTI. I do respect the audi very much so, but the GTI is just more bang for buck in my book
i'm a little biased too since I test drove a manual GTI once, and it was a ton of fun to drive. never driven the A3 before. |

Having said that...if I had do things over, I'd probably get a GTI with DSG (it really is faster and smoother than I could ever shift). I love my E90...but the GTI truly is best bang for the buck! |

The Audi looks more sophisticated. I guess it all depends on the look you're trying to achieve. I was close to buying an A3 for the Mrs. The cargo carrying potential is just phenomenal for a car that's shorter (lengthwise) than a 3 series or even it's A4 sibling.

i decided on my a3 because the build quality to me was much higher with the audi, interior is much nicer, also the audi has more room inside and larger trunk. also a3 handles better as its much lower then the gti. Overall i like the a3 much more which is why i have one

GTi FTW!!!! they are basically the same car..but GTi just looks better than A3 and you pay less too..which is a better buy...and with little mod..it is hot.. and that lambo type steering wheel feels nicer than A3s as well

+1 on the good comments re: the VW GTI.
The only real criticism I have of the GTI is the LOOSE/light steering wheel...you get no feedback...I much prefer the steering in the 3...but then again it costs more. |

i've previously had the mkv gti and if i could do it all over again, i would have got the subaru wrx instead. the subie is much more tighter and a better drive. I never liked the thought of fwd and never ended up liking it. i did however get used to it.
what are you considering? personally, when i was looking i was looking at the wrx, 350z, wrx, and the gti. i picked the gti because i thought it had the best features, and it did but the best drive was undoubtable between the 350 and the wrx.
