Theory: which car will have better resale value?
I'm currently hunting for the right '09 335. I'll most likely sell the car in ~3yrs and buy an f30 and then hang onto that for awhile. So which car will likely have better resale, 3 years from now?
Both 2009 CPO sedans w/ 6MT. I don't plan on tuning - the 335 is a big enough step up from my e46 330 that it will keep me happy. Car1: blk/blk 335i rwd sport/prem/cold/nav in 3rs will have ~52,000 miles on it Car2: TiAg/terra 335 xdrive prem/cold (no nav, no sport) in 3yrs it will have ~30,000 miles on it This is an interesting question to me, as the 6MT usually begs ZSP to go with it, but the extremely low mileage on car2 may make it an easier sell down the road. Any and all feedback is appreciated! Btw I've been lurking for awhile, the search function is awesome, heaps of great info on these boards, so thanks! |

considering ur in NY where xdrive is a plus id say option 2 would sell for more. Not every person looking for a bmw wants the sports package. And the miles would be really low

Better resale? Car 2 due to xDrive and lower miles.
But what you want to look at how much you can buy the car for and how much you expect them to depreciate. Here's a hypothetical scenario. Car1 is $30k, you sell it in 3 years for $20k Car2 is $35k, you sell it in 3 years for $22k As you can see, Car2 in this case has a higher absolute resale value, but you technically saved more money with Car1.

MT is going to limit you in either case...they kill me on the trade in's because of it (and actually scored an unbelievable deal on my MINI for the same reason). In NY, the AWD should definitely help if you're looking to sell it on your own and would choose that because of it and the mileage. If you're just looking to trade it in, I'd go with car 1.

Great input, thank you guys. I hadn't considered this before but obviously the price of the car now (and whether it is above or below market value) will have a substantial impact on the lifetime cost to own when I go to sell it. Both cars are roughly equal in price which means that the black one is probably above market value?

After those criteria are met the rest isn't that important to me, understanding the values of the vehicles down the road is a logical piece of the puzzle. |

I would -- although the demo I tried at the dealer before I ordered mine was a non-ZSP 6-speed 328i. It kinda baffled me, I didn't know who would buy it.

Hmm yeah, I always wondered who was ordering non-sport 6MTs. I found a different car and put a deposit on it today, picking it up on Wednesday.
Don't want to jinx it, will give an update when purchase is complete! edit: it's 6mt w/ sport package |
