is my clutch slipping?

the other day i was driving spiritedly, and I upshifted from 2nd to 3rd around 4000rpm. but once it got into 3rd and i let off the clutch i felt it slow down the car a tiny bit (as if i was downshifting) but i was slightly pressing accelerator and i felt as if the clutch was just spinning in place for a second. I didnt notice the rpms shoot up or anything. and a couple days before, accelerating from stand still i got this slight swaying action from the car (front back front back front back). could this be my clutch slowly going? the car is a 2007 e93 335i. currently just hit 100000km this weekend and its a CPO. and i did learn manual driving on this car. i was almost certain its the clutch... but most of the time it seems fine, so i'm not so sure anymore . anyone know what it could be?

Off topic but you learned manual on a 300hp 2007 BMW? What happened to the days where people got a beater and learned on that? 1992 Celica was mine.

As for the clutch, I've only ever heard of clutch slipping upon acceleration and the RPMs fly up. Your clutch shouldn't be THAT bad, most clutches should be able to go upwards of 100,000 MILES. Unless you are an awful manual driver I doubt it's your clutch.

lol well i practiced on a bunch of friends beater cars before purchasing the bmw. but i did stall it quite a bit in the first couple weeks or so. i think my manual driving is pretty good now and have even taken courses like bmw driver training. any tests to see if it could be the clutch? just out of curiosity how much would it cost to replace clutch? $1500?

There is a clutch delay valve on these cars. This valve introduces some clutch slip. You can remove it or modify it to improve the clutch operation.

I'm unsure, my knowledge base with clutches is pretty low. I bet some other forum members would be able to help though.

If it IS your clutch (I still strongly believe it isn't), the repair is typically ~$700. Clutch/flywheel are cheap, it's the labor.

oh yea! i forgot about the CDV for a second.. that actually sounds like what it might have been considering i was shifting quickly. i'll try that first.

Assuming you are going to resurface the flywheel, the price is correct. If the flywheel cannot be resurfaced, it costs ~1k by itself

OP, I agree with he above. however, if you were shifting very fast into third, you might have induced shift bog where you feel like nothing is happening for a while before it takes off again.

My clutch was replaced recently because it was slipping. It as slipping on s2+ only and it would happen when I shift fast into third (the rpm would shoot a 1000 higher)

That brings up a good question. Are the stock clutches good until S2+? At that point should someone consider getting a stage2 clutch?

The clutches are good at stage2+. My clutch was worn down. I gave it hell for a long time. I am at 75k miles now.

even though I would slip when I shift hard, If I slow down my shift it would power nicely... but it was only a matter of time. I upgraded to ACT street and love the performance (till now ). it handles the power very nicely during fast shift. for the price it's definitely worth it!

From your mods I guess you're running stage2+. how's your clutch holding up?

My buddy just got an ACT clutch and flywheel he loves it. I'm running auto actually, so no issues :P

I looked for a while for a 6MT but in the end 4 doors and xi was most important to me. That being said it was obviously tough to find those requirements.

Clutch install is ~$500. If you are close to FBO, might as well throw in an ACT clutch which costs $500. You'll have to figure out if you want a new/resurface your flywheel when you can take a look at it. I reused mine with my ACT and haven't had any problems. Lots of drag strip runs on it already.

If your engine doesn't stall on 4th gear when starting from a stand still, then your clutch is toasted.
