Oil leak around the sump

I decided to take of the undertray this morning to see if I cab gain access to removing the lower grill and while I was down there I noticed a oil leak around the sump.

I am not sure where this is coming from but have took some pictures if anyone can help me what/where this could be coming from?
I have BMW extended warranty with £250 excess, I would like to know what this coule be and if it could be something simple and take it to a non dealer garage if it costs less than £250

I have also scanned for codes with my inpa software and come across 2 codes. I think the first code relates to anxcillary heating but this keeps coming back after clearing it. I am not sure what the 2nd codes means?

Also while I was underneath I noticed (is it the steering reack?) that one side is quite oily and the other is bone dry???

Any help would be appreciated

41AA Boost Pressure Sensor

Not to scare you, but Sump / gasket needs replacing (not sure if E92 has gasket). Simple job, if somebody know what they are doing.

Just to confirm, check if that is engine oil. Do you regularly top up?

Best bet, get it steam cleaned and wait for few days to see if it returns.

Thanks Makkan - dont suppose you know where the boost pressure sensor is located and if its something that can be DIY?

I have checked the oil and not seen a drop in the level so havent topped up, I will have another look tommorow.

Is the sump/gasket an expensive job to do through a garage? I dont think I could do it on my drive without a ramp

If the weather is good I will try to ge th tray off again and give it a good clean, it is definatly oil as I got some on my hand and felt like engone oil. I dont think its auto trans fluid as I think thats further down?

Not experienced with E92.
Wait till experienced members suggest more here.
I would get it cleaned and keep a close eye to find from where it leaks.

Changing sump isn't expensive job. I would get it done at indi, or take it to bmw if you are covered by extended warranty.

Before condemning the sump gasket (I doubt there is actually a gasket there, it will be a film seal of special sealant) I would have someone who knows what they are looking for to check for other sources of the small weep. It could simply be a loose turbo oil drain or boost hose. I certainly wouldn't start having the sump taken off.

Also that steering rack leakage is so slight, I'd not worry about it.

thanks for that, it will probably have to be a BMW garage that I will take it to. I dont know any good local garages after getting ripped off last time by a supposidly local BMW specialist

With the steering rack, is that PS fluid leaking? as I have had to top it up couple of times in the past few months?
Is this leakage enough to warrant replacing if I was to take it to BMW? (I know its asking like how long is a piece of string)

The rack leak looks very minor, it could be just a little engine oil that has blown back on to it.....or just a poor sealing clip.

Either way, I'd not worry about it too much.

Any oil leak on a steering rack should fail an MOT, you need to bare this in mind if you have one due soon.

Funnily I have just had an MOT and it passed through but then again the steering rack is hidden by the under tray so it would not have been able to see as its not a requirement to take under tray off for the MOT?

There's an interesting discussion on M57N2 diesel oil leak on a german forum, especially from the inlet manifold flaps.
Oil separator seems to be one of the key :

the definitive answer may be in the Puma 19196848-07 but I can't find it

At first glance from the photos it does look like a leak from the sump but I would definitely check that the leak is not originating from the inlet manifold swirl flaps (as Jean019 suggests) as they do leak on higher mileage cars. Check with a torch in the area on the RHS of the engine (as you look at the engine from the front of the car) as high up as you can see. Mine were leaking dirty diesel oil down the RHS of the engine and onto the under-tray.

The point made above about the oil separator/breather: I think this refers to older E60 models which do not have the vortex oil separator fitted to the e90 range.

The A6D1 code points to a faulty "Additional Water Pump" which is an electric pump located under the bonnet on the RHS of the engine. I had the same code and replaced the pump with one from a scrapyard. These pumps can be found on ebay. The purpose of the pump is to circulate water around the system when the car is idling or when the residual heating function is used. There is a test for this pump in DIS whereby DIS will enable the pump circuit and you can hear whether or not it is working.

For my car the pump is item 4 here

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...16&hg=64&fg=18

but this pump is used on numerous models.

Many thanks for the replies above, I forgot to update this thread as I think I posted in another thread with the end result. It was not th sump/gasket that was leaking it was one of the swirl flaps arpund inlet cylinder no 1, which caused the oil to leak and travel down the back of the block and onto the sump. I had the inlet manifold/gasket replaced under warranty and the service manager did ask whether I had changed the oil breather pipe.

Before I took into BMW I had my BMW specialist look it over and immedieatly he said to change the oil breather pipe - even though it is the later vortex type and BMW say its lifetime part (imo it is not), this causes pressure to build up around the engine block (I forgotten how he explained it) which causes oil leaks around the red boost pipe and in my case some leakage around the swirl flaps area.

I have not read the above link but on the older cars they used a "loo" type breather which required frequent changing as it would tend to clog up however BMW then changed it to this vortext type but if you ever take one apart there is like a rubber ring inside which becomes brittle/hard. Since changing the breather pipe I have had not leaks around inlet manifiold and a very slight mist around the red boost pipe - which I am not too overly concerned with changing

With regard to the A6D1 is this quite easy to change?

For the sake of £40 and 30mins labour I would change mine every 3 years

Very easy to change yourself. Just clamp the 2 coolant hoses (I used some cheap joiners G Clamps) which fit on the pump. Unscrew the hose clips, remove the coolant pipes and reverse the process with the new pump. The pump itself can be lifted away from the inner wing as it is only fastened by 3 rubber bushes which slot into holes in the inner wing. I bought the pump from ASWR (link below) who were very responsive by email and phone and quoted me £35 including P&P or £30 if I picked up - which I did. Comes with 3 months warranty and the guys there said they always have a few in.

Looking on the web I don't think its a common failure.
