Engagement Rings
Alright so I absolutely know nothing about them or anything related to them. While im not looking at proposing anytime soon, i'm thinking about it maybe for spring 2008 or something around then. What is it that girls want in a ring? I know.... large karat stone, platinium band ... or something like that. but what are the different cuts, types and how much should i save up? TIA!

Dude, if all she's interested in is a large karat stone, move on... or you'll spend the rest of your life taking care of princess.
Two month's salary is the general rule for an engagement ring. But, there are plenty of ways to make your money go farther... shop around, hook up with wholesale brokers and compare stones with similar size, cut, color and clarity. Most places will negotiate on price too (there's huge markup in retail diamond prices). The hardest part of the process is figuring out what she wants! Good luck! |

Typically 2 months salary is good.
What do girls want? It really depends on the girl. The princess cut is really popular right now. Round cut is always classic. Tiffanys classic settings are popular... A lot of girls want something comparable to their friends, so I hope she doesn't have a lot of rich friends.

I spent 8k for a full circled diamonds set in the channel that's lined with platinium at Tiffany's. Plus I have a vacation coming up in a lil more over than a month which it will be put to good use
2-3 months of your salary really. Think about it, engagement rings are gonna be worn until you get wed. Some woman wears the engagement ring AND the wedding ring both on the same finger. I asked a blonde captain in my airline when I noticed that Here's a tip on how to save a lil bit...do research on the state you're in and around your state for the lowest sales tax...then find a jewelry store there. I saved $200-300 just by driving 35 mins to CT instead of buying one in the mall here in NY which charges almost 3-4% more in sale tax.

my wife wanted something a little different than her friends. I went with the Movado DIamond, it was a few years ago so the style was a little different. She loves it and gets LOTS of remarks about the ring.

I don't care how much it is as long as it looks nice and it isn't cheap quality. Every girl is different though. I have really small hands so I don't want anything too big but I'd like it to be shiny and from a decent quality place. (Tiffany's works ) If I had to give a price range, I wouldn't expect anything more than $8k. I'm not the typical girl though, I think most of them want giant gaudy things that cost over $15k so maybe I shouldn't be the one to ask.
Oh and specifically I like the cathedral setting where the stone sits inside of the band. It doesn't get in the way when it is like that and the stone doesn't have to be as big for it to look good. Here is an example: Best advice though is see what she likes. Take her into a store and just ask her.
