Are you too old to mod?

Hello All,

I've been thinking about this ever since I bought my 09' 335xi in October, am I too old to be modifying my car. I'm 38, married, two young children, and have a corporate career. Sometimes I get weird looks from my co-workers when they see me drive in and I’m starting to wonder. From an external perspective have done a few things but the dark gunmetal wheels and 50% make them think. Am I too old to be modifying my car? Everything I’ve done I’m trying to do tastefully and accentuate the looks of the car and not make it “PUNKY” as my boss calls it.

Im 40 and have subtle mods. The "Murdered out" look is IMHO for the 25-30 crowd.

Doing so in a entry level sport sedan makes it worse. But who cares, it's your car.

Buddy, its your car, you do what you want. I appreciate it when older people are still modding their cars - shows their enthusiasm and passion towards cars IMO. People just love to give looks. I'm 19 and I drive a relatively modded car, and still get random looks. I take it as if they're admiring my car

Especially, if you enjoy modding your car, then go for it no one should be able to stop you!

39 with a son and corporate career. I still mod, but don't go as crazy as some of the younger crowd. New wheels/tires, lip spoiler, some black trim & kidney grills, etc. You won't ever be able to stop some people from seeing it as "punky", but as long as YOU like it that's all that should really matter.

Some people view vehicles as stupid machines to get you from point A to B, and they will likely NEVER understand why you would bother modding and to some they might even wonder why you bother washing and waxing!

From my perspective; keep modding!!

I'm 36 and in the process of getting parts ready for the new 335i that's replacing my totaled 328i.

Modding = Car Enthusiast. If you're a car person, you'll always be a car person and you'll always want to mod

Even better when you're older because you have money to spend on mods!!

I'm enjoying modding my BMW's I've owned in my 30's much more than my Scion xb or VW GTI that I owned in my 20's.

Coworkers giving you looks is just them jealous of your ride.

Never. I can't imagine how many 60-70 year olds are sitting in their garages playing with engine add-ons for their classics (lots of my dad's friends). that's modding.

If if makes you happy then do it! You should neither mod/choose a car to make others happy nor stop for the same reason. If you live to constantly be trying to please others, you're going to live a rather unhappy life.

Not at all, Im 33, Have a mortgage and a son and tastefully modding my car within reason.. I have another car that makes me still feel 18 lol ( Nissan Sentra SE-R Turbo ) but to still mod at your age is perfectly fine..

Hell when I drag race my other car I see many people in there 50s and 60s drag racing there modified muscle cars.. Cars is a hobby that never gets old and you can do it for
a long time.

lol yea it does look like some punk ass 20 year old's car but I like it. That may have something to do with the fact that I am in my 20s but who cares.

My boss is married with kids and he keeps asking what he should do to his BMW. I send him a bunch of pics from this site and tell him what to buy. He's like wow that's so cool but then he goes home and gets bitched at by his wife for even thinking about spending that kind of money on his car. So be glad cuz there are people out there your age that would love to have a car like yours but can't.

Besides ppl are less likely to cut you off, tailgate you, or give you the finger when you have a "punky" looking car

When you do things that look out of place, certain people will laugh at you whether you are old or young. A well thought out modified car is usually appreciated by those who care about cars regardless of your age.

I'm 26, just helped convince a family friend who is 50 to get an e92 328i (red). We had this conversation as well, and determined that as long as the mods are tasteful, you're never too old. Every mod I do, I think of it as making the car a little nicer in an area (or areas). So, if that's your stance, are you ever too old to own a nice car? No way!

The only time I get looks/questions are from the "how does that kid afford a BMW?! He must have rich parents" people. These 'practical' people are abundant in the Midwest, where every 3 series is assumed to be an M3, and everyone thinks my 328 cost $60k. I assure them I pay for my own BMW, and it's really nothing special.

No one is too old to modify a car...don't think what others will think or say about you...do it for you not for them...
