looking for a good deal on a decent diamond
Hey,
Thought people on this forum might have some ideas. I have a setting but need to buy a ~1.5C diamond and looking for recommendations on wholesalers. I know the Dundas or Shuter area downtown can be good and have checked out bluenile as well. Recommendations? |

It's hard to beat Blue Nile's prices. But go for cut and colour rather than worrying about the size. A perfectly cut, colourless 1 carat diamond is much more impressive than a poorer quality but larger stone.

I went to Diamond Exchange, you can shop online & then go in person to see the diamond. My wife is all about the perfect cut (Heart & Arrow)

If Rohit's mom cant hook you up.
Check out Jareds in the USA. I went around to a few shops here in Toronto to get an idea of the pricing. Called Jareds (just 15 minutes south after you cross the boarder) near walden Galleria. Gave them the specs and they beat the price by 1400 dollars! I went accross and bought all 3 rings for myself and my wife. I even took the extended warranty and still saved over 1500 compared to local retailers here in Toronto. Jareds also has been around for over 100 years, so they are legit.

I'm almost embarrassed to say it because I felt like I was shopping at the big box store of the diamond business (to say nothing of the annoying radio ads), but after a stupid amount of research, running around, comparing, etc., I found I couldn't beat Spence for quality/price/selection.

While we're on this subject, 4 years ago I paid 28k for my E90 (CPO 325i), and then a year later paid the same for a diamond engagement ring (1.91 caret, round cut, etc.. the appraisal sheet is around here somewhere).. bye bye my bank account back then! It has since recovered, though

make sure you know what the rocks clarity and cut and etc of it size is important but what clarity and cut determines the price. like a vvs2 diamond would be a very good diamond not the best but its up there.

Thanks, I've definitely done my homework. I feel like I should be in the business with all the research done. I just don't have time to look at 20 different wholesalers to find the best deal.

i recently proposed as well. What I learnt through my process was not to look for the "best deal" based on specs, instead look for the diamond that when you see it, you have to have it.
Obviously you need to have a size, cut, color, clarity ect in mind, but specs arent what impress. Choosing a diamond is hard, each one is different. Two with the exact same specs can look completely different! I went a little above my budget, but we all do really when shopping for this type of thing. I have a few friends who do custom jewelery as well as a friend who is one of the bigger wholesalers in Toronto and Israel so I am confident with the "deal" I got. Most importantly, my girlfriend absoletely LOVES her ring! Another thing to rememeber, this is a lifetime investement. If the worst happens and you guys are in a horrible financial situation, its nice to know you have something of value on her hand... So dont go cheap, and dont go for the best deal, but go for that one diamond that you cant get out of your head after you see it... Thats just my $.02, take it for what it is

Just my $0.02. Don't overspend.
When you look further down the road at your life together, which will likely entail a home purchase, that extra $5-10k you spent on your fancy diamond could've gone towards the closing costs on a new home. I'm just about to get married and move into a new house. The costs add up really, really fast! Don't be in a hurry to spend your money. She's still your fiance at the end of the day no matter how much you spent on the ring. |

BlueNile.com was the best in terms of quality and pricing. I got a 1.5ct diamond from them and had it appraised afterwards for insurance and it was valued at over 70% more than what I paid. You can just buy the diamond loose from them and get a custom setting made for something really unique!

Don't go crazy on the first diamond.... too many other expenses as said above, house, car, kid etc....
much easier once you've been married for a while to upgrade the diamond.... bought a decent diamond and told her we'll upgrade to a 2 carat on our 8th anniversary (we got married on 08/08/08).. said i wanted to buy my bimmer first... she agreed |
