When I heard the 1 series will have the same exact engines as the 3 series, but it is lighter I got pretty frusterated. How come I have to spend upwards of 40 grand on my 3 to get the performance and now BMW is putting that and more performance into the 1. If you ask me the 1 series should start out with a 4 cylinder and make the upgraded engine the 128i. Also, whats up with the 5 series having the same engines too? If I'm paying 50/60 grand for a car I would expect it to have more power than the car below it, and plus because its heavier. Thats why I bought an A6. To me, BMW seems like it wants to save money here but just throwing all the same engines into every car. So now my 3 series will be outperformed by a 1 series that payed $10,000 less. Shouldnt be.

the 3 has never been a good value, it's virtues make up for that

I realize there are alot faster cars for less money, but Audi and Benz have more powerful engines as you go up the line. BMW has the same engines until you get to the 6 series. Im talking about engines within a company. To me its weird

the more engines available the more cost of producing different motors, and certifying each one for emissions grows

it cost a ton of money to offer a new powerplant

is bmw going to spend a ton of money to put a smaller motor in a car that may not sell well when they can just use what they've got? doubtful

They don't have to, in Europe they offer 1.6, 1.8, 2.0 petrol engines in the 1 series already. So why are they putting the 2.8 as the base in the U.S.?

And your 328xi will out preform a 528xi which also costs $10K more so what is your point, that is the way BMW has done it for many years.

I (respectfully) disagree.

BMW has made its reputation for making small, lightweight, RWD, fun-to-drive cars that have best in class driving dynamics. This car, more than ANY OTHER BMW IN YEARS promises to deliver on that.

I love my E92 - but lets face it - its closer to the last generation 540 than any historical 3 series...

I like the fact that BMW is building a driver's car instead of catering to the "style over substance" crowd.

I hope this car becomes their best selling model over the next few years. And, I also hope they deliver a true M model in this class (over the next fews years), as its a car I would definitely consider.

besides being wrong on the BMW engines nomenclature and capacities (I6 not V6, both are 3.0L

you missed my point that to produce a car for sale in the USA is needs to have the engine certified, this is a very expensive process.

BMW does make smaller and lighter engines in other countries, BMW can not bring those engines into the USA vehicles without a major investment.

BMW is not going to spend a ton of money to make a vehicle less powerful, and less desireable to consumers. The amount they'd have to spend may even make the less powerful motors more expensive then the motors currently offered.

BMW is pretty good at segmentation, I am confident they will find someway to neuter the 1 series so they don't canabalize the 3 series.....

Either making it ugly (oh shoot....already done) or play around with the ECU so the 3er owners who are delicate don't get offended.

No 1.8. And there's a 3.0 in the 130i.

thank you. Loomp, if you look at all my posts, you would see that I tell it like it is, I'm respectful when respect is dued/deserved. If I see a informative thread, I dish out kudos, when I see dumb threads, I say so.

This topic has been debated to death, and some people, like the OP, seem to think that owning a 3 series is some sort of privilege and deserve to have engine/options that a 'lesser' car like the 1 series should NOT have, e.g. comments like "OMG, why does the entry level 1er have the same engine/option list as the 3 series?" truly shows the smogness of the buyer and their badge-whoreness. I'm willing to bet when the OP buys a 5er later down the line, he would be like "oh dear God, the 1 and 3 series don't deserve the engine that is in my mightily fine 5er" while drinking tea with the pinky finger raised and nose points way upward in the air

As Ward rightly point out, BMW is not a charity organization, it's a business set to make money, engine development is a very expensive process
