travelling to germany

Hey Guys,

I am travelling to Germany for work and plan to stay an extra week to see the sights.

I'll be in Cologne and then flying back from Munich.

Let me know if there anything I must see or do while I am there.

Thanks!

Hofbrauhaus is overrated, imho. But, considering besides the Welt and the Frauenkirche there's nothing more to see in Munich, an evening can be spent there.

I was going to mention the BMW museum, but it sounds like that is already in the plan.

Yea, it's not all that great... But then again, the more you've been there I guess it can get old quick

When are you heading out there? Depending on the time of year, there could be some sweet festivals (some of the smaller town fests are the best), and then of course there is Oktoberfest and christmas markets if you're there that late in the year.

I was a big fan of the Christmas markets in Nurnburg while I was stationed there.

Rent a car and drive. You'll have fun in some of the areas where there is no speed limit. The autobahn is worth it, plus you can go off the beaten path to places the trains don't go.
Stay away from the very large cities (other than Munich) because they are typically just a large city and not much else. Just mostly industrial buildings etc.
Definitely make a stop at the Nurburgring. Rent a track prepped car if you can and have a blast (don't crash!). RSR is located 1 block from the track and a great bunch of guys.
Rothenburg is a fantastic old walled city and very pretty. I would say a definite must see.
Head South into the German Alps and go to Neuschwanstein. SO worth it!
Ulm is a nice city also with a good historical area.
Black Forest is great for driving too.

I've been to Germany five times for work and pleasure. Ein bier bitte!

The first thing you MUST DO is check out the scenary.... and breathe in some deep FRESH european air. Second, if you do not go to the Nurburgring you are not a car enthusiast and ban yourself from the forum LOL. Third, if you like alcohol, find and taste some Absinthe and German bier!

Not too far from your itinerary;
Dachau
Stuttgart (Mercedes & Porsche)

More at the west;
The best museums in the world

Also one that you can't miss - Neuschwanstein castle

Sorry if it wasn't a BMW.

I would suggest as other cities: Berlin and Hamburg

I might be biased for Hamburg, but I love that city
Great, great food. I can recommend you a few places to eat there.. A bit pricey though
But Haffencity is worth seeing, and IMO it is one of the nicest german cities.

exchange rate is getting better.

Just got back from a europe trip (mostly motorcycles through the alps and little towns).

But we stayed in Munich for a couple nights pre- and post- motorcycle trip.

BMW Welt
is cool. I stopped there and grabbed a beer and watched the sites a bit.

New models on display for checking out

The BMW museum
is also pretty good though it's something like 9 euros to get into the actual good part of it (BS in my opinion... enthusiasts come there from all over the world supporting your brand and you charge them to check out your history? Charge like a <5 Euros if you want to keep freeloaders from just walking in).

HB and Augustiners in Munich
if you like beer. Then entire Marienplatz is good to walk around and grab food/beer.

Just south of Munich is a cute area -Prien and Lake Chimese - depending on your interests and who you are with...you might like this (gfs and wives would probably love it more than dudes). Beautiful scenery with the mountains and the lake. Good places to eat along the lake.

Also somewhat close by - is the Grossglockner in Austria. We did this on the motorcycles on one of the most beautiful days of our trip. It's a "toll road" but totally worth it. It's one of the coolest roads for those people that like driving / riding.

Pics

Cheers...have a good time - plenty of stuff to do / check out in and around Munich. Oktoberfest is fun but a bit of shit show too. I loved it when I went in college... but my dad didn't enjoy it nearly as much... wasn't really his "scene" even though he loves drinking beer.

Those would be my run downs for you that are within reasonable distance to Munich. There are probably a million others things to do as well.. but that's my 0.02 from my recent trip a couple weeks ago.

Driving wasn't bad at all. I looked up the signs beforehand in a travel book from the local library. Rented a bmw 118 from sixt (someone else recommended them in one of the threads here).
