a lot of people will argue against this since it's a bimmer forum. but i do think it is a downgrade.
it's not about which is faster, it's about the class of cars. maybe the new Evo is faster than 335i but it is still a downgrade. |

I think it's a downgrade, as the S is the equivalent of an M in the BMW world. Not everyone needs an M, and not everyone is satisfied without an M. You'll be driving this car, so only you can decide...

And if you don't believe me just look at the numbers. Magazines rate the S4 0-60 at about 5.3. The 335i is rated at 5.0 and that's a generous #. A lot of poeple on here have been running 4.8ish bone stock. |

I also wouldn't consider it a downgrade, but I personally could never go for an S4 as it is heavy, unbalanced, and understeers like a pig.

It's like comparing apples and oranges. An s4 is meant to be more of a showoff sporty car as opposed to a 335i which puts on an impression of a regular run of the mill 3 series then just rips your car up in shreds after you hit the throttle.
For the exclusivness i'd rather have the s4... For a everyday car i'd rathr have the 335i |

I think that the fact that you're asking this question means you buy your cars for all the wrong reasons. Try getting what you want sometime, not what you think will impress others.

What do I think? I think....
DON'T FEED THE TROLLS! Come on, first post, on a bimmer forum, is if going from an '05 S4 to a 335i is a down grade? As well as the comment that an S4 is faster, which is highly debatable. That just smacks of troll-ish behavior to me. Also, I don't see the Audi S series as a comparison to the BMW M series. I think the Audi RS series is more like the BMW M series.

I think it depends on what you are looking for? Drive both and then decide. I found the 335 to be the right way to go cause of the "feel" no real solid reason, the 335 just felt better to me...

S4 is a fancy Passat. The 335i is unique. Best car ever for this price!

Also, nothing wrong with the passat, for that money, I'd rather have one of those than Camry or Accord... I don't think it is a downgrade or upgrade... It is a different car all together. Who cares about the 0-60 numbers. They are both fun to drive, very refined. Bimmer has better driving feel, Audi has better interior. I'd keep the S4 if I were you as you would loose both ways -- on your Audi sale and (currently overpriced) 335 purchase... |

1) Yes it is a downgrade no matter what anyone says. An S4 is a badass alcantara wrapped machine inside that vastly outclasses the 335. It's also a higher calibre car (A4 = 335, S4 > 335)
2) The S4 isn't faster at all, not by a long shot. The 335 is the faster car unless it's raining or snowing.

Drive the 335i, you will realize its not a downgrade at all.
I had a modded A4 and driven a stock S4 many times to compare. The 335i is still a better handling car. IMO Plus the 335 isnt a gas hog.

It's a sidestep. In years past, i'd agree. M = S, and the 335i is no S. But the S4 has never been on that level of the M (and I'm a pretty big Audi fan). For me, the proper version is RS = M. My loaded 335i costs just around the same as an S4 and they put out similar performance. I heavily considered both and went with the 3 do to the ease of modding.
Just do it
